Les triplettes de Belleville

, , ,

Les Triplettes de Belleville is a 2003 animated feature film written and directed by Sylvain Chomet.
It was released as The Triplets of Belleville in North America, and as Belleville Rendez-vous in the UK.The film was highly praised by audiences and critics for its unique (and somewhat retro) style of animation. It was an international co-production between companies in France, Belgium and Canada.

The film satirically pokes fun at national stereotypes and clichés foreigners spread about French and Americans. It laughs at the stereotypes of the French (for example their alleged obsession with the Tour de France, or their so-called fondness for eating frogs) and Americans (for example their alleged obesity and lewd manner).

The film features almost no spoken dialogue, though some spoken words (such as Tour de France radio commentary and a speech by Charles de Gaulle on evening TV) are included sporadically...

I watched it some years ago, it was a nice movie, definitely visually interesting -- but I also found it to convey quite a sad mood.

actually, french people are used to watch Disney's animations with happy end and songs.

This one really disturbs you as the main character is ugly (the little become a thin and emotionless guy) and the grand-mother has a club-foot (?)

...and talk about the dog: big, fat, old ^^

I reallly love this movie.

Yes I remember that dog was inspiring such a sadness.. barking at trains in solitude, getting fatter, older.. oh my smile

Thanks for commenting Andrea !

Well, I hope you won't mind if I tell you that most of your beautiful pictures are looking quite sad too !! Don't you like colors ? smile

By the way, I think you've listed some subjects we are both interested in. To be discussed later on, I guess.wizard

Well, I might say that your drawings are not bad too... I immediately though about this when I saw them (if you know it) :http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=tIwme-YQNHc

A very very good movie. The style, as the fact there's "almost no spoken dialogue", the simplicity of most of the characters, the way they behave, the threat of modernity to traditional life, the nostalgic references and so on, are a "hommage" to the movies directed by Jacques Tati. In one sequence, you can see on a wall a post of a Tati's movie.
