Eurovision 2008 Turkey - Video Clip of Mor ve Ötesi

,

"It's established itself as one of the most important figures in the Turkish arts & culture scene. Not only musical pioneers, but also prominent activists in various anti-war and anti-nuclear campaigns, the band and its members individually are tireless proponents of freedom, equality and justice across the nation and world, says a press release."

Mor ve Ötesi (meaning "Purple and beyond") is a Turkish alternative rock band hailing from the city of Istanbul,The band's name is a play on "morötesi" which is the Turkish word for "ultraviolet".

Mor ve Ötesi was formed in 1995 with the line-up comprising of Kerem Kabadayı (drums), Harun Tekin (vocals & guitar), Derin Esmer (vocals & guitar) and Alper Tekin (bass). They released their first album Şehir (The City) in 1996 and played at their first live concert outside Istanbul at METU, Ankara. That year, Burak Güven replaced Alper Tekin on bass.

Bırak Zaman Aksın (Let Time Flow), their second album was released in 1999 to massive success. Just after its release, Derin Esmer moved to the USA and was replaced by prominent guitarist Kerem Özyeğen. After the devastating 1999 Kocaeli earthquake, Mor ve Ötesi started playing more on social and political themes. They were also very active in the opposition against the use of nuclear energy in Turkey.

In 2001, they released their third album, Gül Kendine (Smile at Yourself). With Kerem Özyeğen, there was a noticeable change in the music, and after 17 August there was a noticeable change in lyrics. In the summer of 2003, Mor ve Ötesi's single, Yaz (Summer/Write) debuted, which was a cover of the famous song performed by the famous Turkish superstar Ajda Pekkan during the seventies.

Their fourth album Dünya Yalan Söylüyor (The World is Lying) was released in 2004. The album became their most popular album in Turkey. Reaching 250.000 sales, the album proved to be a breakthrough for rock music in Turkey. Their first single, "Cambaz" (meaning: Acrobat) and their third single "Bir Derdim Var" (meaning: I have a problem) (which was also included in the Çağan Irmak film "Mustafa Hakkında Herşey" (Everything About Mustafa) soundtrack ) got considerably more attention. Since their previous work was not as well known, many new fans were not aware that they weren't a new band. Although this album has been their best selling album, it is not admired by their old fans as much as their previous work, and some have even seen it as "betrayal". The album contained considerable political criticism against the activities of the USA both in Iraq and the rest of the world. The very same year they received a Golden Orange Award for their hit song, Bir Derdim Var for the movie, Mustafa Hakkında Her Şey". Also, Dünya Yalan Söylüyor, was voted "The Best Turkish Rock Album Ever" by Blue Jean magazine.

Their fifth album Büyük Düşler (High Hopes) was released on May 8, 2006. This is an album mainly dealing with the political problems of Turkey and the personal problems of the group members, including loss of family members and their relationships. It has a darker sound compared to their previous albums. This album is regarded as a homage to their old fan base and a return to a style closer to their earlier albums. The first video was for the song "Şirket" (Corporation), a song criticising capitalism. The second single chosen was "Küçük Sevgilim (My Little Lover)", and its music video was directed by Ketche. This album was voted "The Best Album of 2006" by Blue Jean magazine.

On December 10, 2007 TRT's general manager İbrahim Şahin announced that Mor ve Ötesi will represent Turkey in Eurovision Song Contest, with the song 'Deli', which will be held in Belgrade on 22 May 2008.

Mor ve Ötesi has a new website up specific to this years 2008 Eurovison, This site has the lyrics in 8 languages to go with there new song "Deli".

Atatürk's biggest gift for children:Children's Day is celebrated on April 23rd

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (founder of the Republic of Turkey as well as its first President.) was the one who started Children's Day in Turkey. After the Ottomans had fallen during World War I Turkey had been occupied by other European countries such as England, Italy and France. Ataturk was a commander who gave his army courage. After a while they fought against the Europeans and just like the Ottomans, they slowly took back control of their country. After Turkey was back in control of the Turkish people there was an election and Ataturk won the election. He started to build up the government and create what is today the Republic of Turkey. Ataturk loved children and he often said: "Children are a new beginning of tomorrow". He even dedicated the day 23rd of April to the children which is today celebrated as Children's Day as well as the date when the Republic of Turkey was founded. On April 23rd People from many countries from all countries all over the world and people from different countries give each other gifts. "'The baby seal looked into the eyes of her executioner. Barely a flicker of emotion shows on the fisherman’s face as he smashes a steel-tipped club into her mouth. She lay whimpering on the ice, blood pouring from her jaw and nose.

'But she wasn’t yet dead, so the sealer hit her in the face another 4 times before slamming a hooked “hakapik” club into her stomach and dragging her across the ice towards the ship.'"

Annabel Lee-Edgar Allan Poe

,

1849
Annabel Lee
by Edgar Allan Poe

This poem appeared in The International Miscellany.
"Annabel Lee" is generally credited to represent Poe's
young wife, Virginia Clemm.

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Note: [This is probably the last poem Poe wrote. In 1850, Frances S. Osgood identified Poe's wife, Virginia, as the real Annabel Lee, an attribution that has meet with much agreement. In contrast, T. O. Mabbott and other scholars have pointed out that although perhaps inspired, in part, by Virginia, Annabel Lee is a fictional character and need not truly represent any real person. Elmira Shelton, Poe's childhood sweetheart, considered herself as Annabel Lee, even though she outlived the author by many years.] (notes from: http://www.eapoe.org/)
