One little problem... [rc 1]

"Everything in moderation."
One of the golden philosophies, started in part by Aristotle and continued to the modern day.
And for good reason.
It works perfectly, because too much of a good thing isn't so good (or so they say), and too much of a bad thing...well, it's a bit obvious.
Work a bit, play a bit. Eat healthy, but treat yourself. Exercise, but just laze around sometimes.
Not too much or too little of anything.
It seems like the perfect idea.

But wait.

If you're doing everything in moderation, you aren't exactly using moderation in moderation, are you? And that's the one fatal error in the whole thing.
Right idea, but kind of impossible.
Oh well, we'll get it next time.

Realism is boring

, , , ...

You know, I don't want my games to look like shit. However we're at a point that things look pretty realistic allready. seriously, beyond Mario Galaxy who the fuck cares?

Somebody answer this logically for me: Why the fuck do graphics whores have to be able to see every last fucking pore on every fucking visible patch of skin before you're happy? Why do the graphics HAVE TO BE THAT FUCKING GOOD? If graphic whores had their way We'd have development teams working their fucking ASS off for about 3 years working on graphics and then decide to fill it with hour long cutscenes YOU WAN'T TO KNOW WHAT THAT IS?!

A MOTHER FUCKING MOVIE

Time to calm down.. haaahhhhh... happy mole. To this day no one has explained to me WHY. Prove to me there is a reason for it to be high-def, 1080p or whatever the fuck. Prove to me that the game play of the games you love so much (shooters, sports games, racing games, you name it I don't care) will STILL be worth a SHIT if you stripped all that crap away. I see no love of video games in games like this. I see distaste and disrespect of video games in the attempt to make them into movies.

We have reached what many people probably know (or don't know for that matter) as the uncanny valley with certain videogames striving to be not videogames: but movies.

To all the graphics whores: Is this what you really want? 30 hour long movies? This sends Companies into development costs that are so massive that the companies behind these efforts simply can't afford to be original, let alone take the risk. That's ok though, I know how much you looovvveee first person shooters

I live in a photorealistic world. There's no power-ups, no explosive barrels, no cellshaded worlds, no women walking around with breasts larger than her head, I cant speed down the highway as fast as I please, I can't randomly steal cars and I certainly cant blow shit up without reprimand. It's not special. Videogames are an oppurtunity to do what you cant in your regular mundane life and have a shitload of fun while doing it.

For me, the closer video games come to appearing photo realistic, the closer they come to looking like actors in movies, the less interested I am in them.

I don't know why these talented CG animators and Writers waste their time trying to make video games into movies. Just go make movies if that's what you want to do. I just ask that you put an effort into your graphics, but it doesnt have to be the factor that makes or breaks the sucess of videogames.

Don't get me wrong, You know, I don't want my games to look like shit

this was an ugly room, now its a decent one

Those that know me (and I mean the real me, and not Lithium) and have been to my house before know about my room with a colour scheme that's either suited for a stoner or a child playhouse, a 'Stoner's playhouse', if you will

That's the last time I let my sister paint a room... While hotboxing.

Fear not! for I have repainted the room myself this time and have learnt my lesson and I will hencefourth never outsource my labour ever again, because I am much better at it anyways.

Anyways, here are the before and after pictures (i'm sure you'll be able to tell which ones are the before and after) if you want to know how drastic a change a simple paint job can do...

The countdown: top videogame parodies

favourite videogame parodies

5: Metal Gear Awesome

I'll make this blunt: you're only going to know what's going on if you've played metal gear solid before. If you've never played the game before you will have absolutely no idea what's going on and therefore not understand any of the references in this fasted paced, comedic flash.

4: Super mario bros Z series

ok this one's kind of cheating, since it's a whole series, but If you like super mario, sonic or even DBZ you'll apreciate it. This blend of Mario, Sonic and with fight scenes inspired by Dragon Ball Z Is perhaps one of the most cliche series around for a few reasons:

-It's a sprite flash
-said sprite flash has mario and sonic characters
-It rips off DBZ
-has many explosions

Yep it has everything you expect from a generic sprite flash, expect for one thing: The execution of the flash is great, everything to the the fight scenes and even the odd bit of comedy every now and then keeps this animation from getting generic. (ah least they took out the random screaming like in DBZ)

3: Zelda: heart for the hero

I've allways wondered how Link manages to converse with the deziens of hyrule without uttering a single word, yet Link is somehow able to. Maybe he speaks telepathically with them, I have no freaking clue to be honest. Anyways, It's about time that his inability to talk finally catches up to him. This animation is short, but sweet anyone who's played a zelda game will like it.

2: 8 bit D&D
Technically this isn't a videogame parody since it's about Dungeons and dragons but I'll let that slide since it uses the 8 bit final fantasy sprites. If there's a quote that can sum up this animation it's this:

"ARE THERE ANY CHICKS THERE?! BECAUSE IF THERE ARE I WANT TO DO THEM!"

1: Red vs Blue
you can also click here
and you can click here for another one!

You didn't think I'd forget about this series, did you? Red vs Blue may be a machinima rather than a parody (unless you count the pubbers on xbox live, click the last link to see what I mean) I absolutely love this series, since I couldnt pick from all of the episodes I decided to search for a montage of the best moments in the series, I couldnt even pick between those. So please, do yourself a favour and watch all three of the linked collections :D

The countdown

I bet you're wondering: Why can't you just update your blog more? once a week seems a little on the minimalist side, I admit. In an effort to make my blog more entertaining to you and to reward your patience I've decided to write a new segment, every week on a tuesday or wendsday (I'm not exactly sure which day I'll choose, but you'll get the normal rants on the weekends, as usual)I'll update my blog with a new segment I like to call: The countdown (yes, I thought up the name all by myself)

I present you the first issue in what will probably be a long running series:

The countdown:Top five videogame music covers

Yes, I'm sure we all have our favourite track that after spending a few sessions with the game it's best tracks are still playing in our head even after we shut the console off, It's these tracks that usually end up getting uploaded on peer to peer networks and to the musically endowed gamer, the desire to remix the song ensues, sometimes overwhelms them and evenntually they give in and try their hand at the videogame cover scene. The covers listed below, are my own personal favourites. Enjoy.

5: ZREO music- Windwaker: Ocean redux
Click to listen

This cover by the Zelda reorchestrated theme replicates the rush I got out of playing legend of zelda: the windwaker when I first set out on my voyage on the great sea for the first time, some may argue that they thought that the sea travel in that game was boring, I wholeheatedly dissagree. As somone who was rasied in a private island, I couldnt help looking out on the horizon and gazing at the seemingly endless sea, just wishing that one day I could go out there and explore the islands on the horizon. Wind waker perfectly pulls this feeling out of me, and when I venture out on the great sea, I cant help but feel like I'm on an adventure. Like I said before, this remix perfectly replicates this feeling and that's why I think it deserves a spot on this list.

4:The minibosses- Super Mario bros 2
Click to listen
Like the prevous entry on this list, memories of playing super mario bros up the effect to this song. That doesn't mean that you even have to had grown up playing mario to enjoy this cover. This song is basically a mashup of all the notatble tracks in Super mario bros 2 (or doki doki panic if you want to be technical)and it's a very good example of the underground videogame music cover scene, as it stays faithfull to the original tracks, while adding in somthing to make it their own. I can't get enough of this track, espesially the ending.

3:Black Mages- Clash On The Big Bridge
Click to listen
Ah, final fantasy. The long running series has had it's fair share of great songs, but It was espesially tough for me to pick a cover to represent probably one of the most prominent group in the final fantasy sector of videogaming covers, However It has to be done. The black mages have their fare share of awesome covers, but I could only pick one to be in this list: I think Clash on the big bridge is probably my favourite track from them, and I know all you final fantasy 7 fanboys out there are probably going to scold me for not picking somthing from that game as it's synonimous with final fantasy, but you're just going to have to deal with it, their FF7 stuff isnt their (the black mages) best work.

2: Stemage (Metroid metal)- Phrendrana Drifts
Click to listen

Stemage's cover of Metroid Prime's Phendrana drifts is my absolute favourite videogame metal cover because it's perhaps the most most epic metal videogame cover that I've heard in a really long time, the in game track is so mellow so when you listen to this cover the sheer magnitude of the guitar riffs is entirely unexpected, and because of this it brings a tear of joy down my face.

Bravo, Stemage. Your song just blew my eardrums.

1: Nobuo Uematsu & Eminence Sumphony- One winged angel
Click to listen

I'm a may be a sucker for great guitar riffs, but I'm an even bigger sucker for amazing orchestral pieces. And Nobuo Uematsu's One winged angel is perhaps one of the most memoriable songs from the final fantasy series, It's epic mix of choir and good arangement makes for one of the most moody pieces in videogaming music history and perfectly protrays the sheer power the one winged angel has. It gets my blood pumping just listening to it.

'nuff said.

Well that's the list for you I certainly wanted to add more, but seeing how long the final entry is with only 5 covers on the list I think I made the right move. feel free to leave a comment and express your thoughts on this new segment!
