If there are Osage oranges (Maclura pomifera) around you, breaking it in pieces and placing it on the perimeters of the garden will keep these from entering. I don't think that they grow in your area; but if they do, it really works.
Cynthia, no I don't think we have anything as exotic as the Osage round here. We sort of just let the snails get on with it. There are certain plants they destroy in days, but most seem to survive.
