Happy 4th Birthday to Micah!

Happy Birthday Micah. smile I know it was yesterday - I never got on here to say anything about it though!! What a week it has been. I'm so glad we celebrated your birthday on the 4th and did it with TONS of family and friends. smile You had your dinosaur cupcakes and played with your good friend Emily and your cousins, Levi and Emma. All of your aunties and your one Uncle - and all the grandparents AND great-grandparents were able to be there - HOW SPECIAL!!!

You've amazed daddy and me these past 4 years - You are SUCH a sweet boy - your heart is kind and you are CONSTANTLY making new friends everywhere you go. At 2 1/2 you were already telling people you met on the street or in the store, "Good-bye my friend!" . . . and nothing has changed. smile Just yesterday, at Target, you told a little girl you instantly bonded with, "Good-bye my friend! It's my birthday today!" That made my heart smile. smile

You're so tall, and you're so grown up. Gone are your chubby ankles and wrists, gone (well, mostly) is the baby fat on your face. Lucky for me, you STILL want to cuddle and hug with me - which is just FINE! Never stop that - never. smile Your vocabulary has gone from "thank you" and "LIGHT!" . . . to "I just love how squishy you are" and "Isn't Ella so cute??" smile

Ella.....she's the luckiest little sister around, isn't she? smile She takes it for granted that you let her play with MOST of your toys...and that you are always available to help her learn new words or how to "do big stuff" - someday she'll realize just how blessed she is. smile You are her MOST favorite person - far beyond Daddy and Mommy. smile And that's OK with us - we don't mind.

Well Micah - Happy 4th Birthday. smile Mommy and Daddy are so very proud of you - of who you are choosing to be and we love you so much!

Happy Birthday, Sweet Ella!

One year has quickly passed, in which our tiny baby girl has blossomed into a toddler with a mind of her own! Ella, when you were born, you instantly became your brother's favorite person (squashing the competition: Daddy & Mommy) - and nothing has changed since that first day!
You have been going, going, going, ever since you figured out you could! Rolling over to check everyone out, scooting around to see your brother, dragging your self around once you were strong enough - in an attempt to keep up...and when that didn't work, you figured out how to crawl and off you were...at 6 months! Since then you've just gotten faster and harder to catch! I fully expected you to be walking by your first birthday, but you beat me by more than a month! And I did NOT expect you to be practically running! Pretty quick, Mama's going to have to get into better shape to catch you!! smile It's a good thing you have such a good big brother around - he's great for "gently" guiding you around things that are "not for babies" . . . and he's even strong enough to carry you around! (When you let him, that is!)

There is nothing better than to come into your room and find you with a huge goofy grin on your face, welcoming any that enter there. Micah only wishes he knew how to climb into your crib on his own so you two could "hang out" in there together, listening to the music and playing with stuffed friends.

You and Micah are so very different in personalities and temperment, yet each of you are special in your own unique way. I give thanks and praise to God that you are both "fearfully and wonderfully made" -- by God Himself! We are so thankful to have you, Ella-Bella, in our lives, making it noisier and busier - but so much more fun and interesting!

So Happy Birthday, Sweet Ella - we love you & can't wait to see who you are growing up to be!

All our love,

Daddy, Mommy & Bubby (Micah)

My Unexpected Hitch-hiking ALMOST Immigrant

This morning I was a part of an immigration...well, in the end, not quite. Packing the kids in the car is never an "easy" task - it's hot outside, the car's hot inside, Micah would rather run around the car than get in the car, Ella's not too keen on that carseat, so strapping her in is somewhat of a challenge.

Anyway, this morning we packed ourselves into the car to go get Micah's hair cut. (He needed it desperately!) Everyone had finally calmed down, and I was merging into traffic on the interstate, when I noticed some movement on the hood of the car. I must admit, this startled me a bit!! Once I had finished merging and was no longer a danger to myself or anyone else (yeah right) I peered over the steering wheel, out the window - and looked straight into the eyes of a TERRIFIED little lizard. The poor guy had been sunning himself on my nice warm car in the nice hot sun, when we drove off. He must have been dozing quite soundly to not notice us moving around inside and out for the whole 5 minutes it takes us to get going. smile

So we're going down the road at a good speed - 65mph - and this little guy is hanging on for dear life. I was SO surprised to see him there that it gave me a bit of a jump, and then the whole thing seemed SO FUNNY that I burst into laughter, which surprised the kids in the back. I didn't tell Micah what I saw, for fear he'd undo his seatbelt in a flash and be up front with me before I knew what he was doing. smile

I'm chanting to myself (and to the lizard), "Don't move little guy! Hang on! We'll get off the highway in just a minute and you can jump to safety! Don't jump now! Stay put! Keep your head down and hang on tight!!" He listened. He stayed VERY STILL and only popped his head up ONCE (almost lost it then!) and then clung for dear life the rest of the way.

At the red light, I waited and waited for him to make his exit. However, he was so petrified that he moved not one tiny muscle. At the next 2 red lights he roused himself, and appeared ready to leap. However, he didn't move fast enough, and it looked like I was going to witness a suicidal move when he almost jumped into traffic. (If only he had been on the OTHER side of the car, there he would have at least had a chance to make it off the road!) But, against all odds, he did not jump, and stayed put.

We got to the hair cut place - they weren't open - so we drove to the nearest Target. I love Target. I decided to let him make his own personal exit whenever he would choose, rather than to flick or prod him off my car. So the kids and I went into Target and wandered for almost 1 hour. We came back out and drove off - with no sign of our little hitch-hiker. After going back to the hair cut place, getting Micah's hair cut (25 min or so), we headed home again.

What do you know?! As we merge back onto traffic on the interstate - up pops a little head - AGAIN! At this point I can't believe it - this little dude must have a death wish or something. Again, I am chanting at him in hopes that he will survive the trip home. I figure, he didn't get to immigrate after all (I had expected to leave him several miles from home, in the middle of a parking lot and busy streets - far away from our nice quiet corner. I hoped he'd find a new home.) But instead - he was going back home. No longer an immigrant, and just simply a hitch-hiker, he again clung to the hood of my car.

He seemed to have lost some common sense though - he popped his head up a few times (almost flew off the car then), he jumped around a bit (almost never landed), and at one point, he turned and faced DEAD ON INTO THE WIND and his poor head and neck and back flipped back - but those stubborn little toes clung to the windshield wipers. He managed to drag his head back down and hang on the rest of the way.

So we returned home, took our time getting out of the car - it takes longer to get out than in I think! Peered at his little self who was again too petrified to move, and Micah and I decided to leave him alone. I'm just hoping he'll manage to get his little self off the hood of my car before we leave for church tonight - we'll see!

Potty Trained

The day has finally arrived - Micah is potty trained! Or is he....we have been working hard for such a long time that I honestly thought this day would never come. smile I had tried every "trick" from every well-meaning advice-giving person out there. Cherrios in the toilet, m&ms as a reward, hanging out naked (just micah was naked...), plastic "underwear", spending time with potty trained kids his own age, and on it goes! We even purchased a remote controlled CAT bulldozer and set it up high where he could see it every day and be reminded of his reward when all of his (you know what) goes into the potty - every day.

And so for weeks we have looked at the bulldozer. We have discussed what the bulldozer will do. We have discussed what must be done to earn the bulldozer. We have tried to climb (unsuccessfully) up to the bulldozer. He wanted that bulldozer. So what was it that kept him from completely potty training?

Finally, after a freak accident - one where Micah "accidently" went #2 in the potty - occurred, we told him we'd take him to get ice cream when he really, truely meant to and went in the potty. (We are still talking about #2 here - #1 had been going on for a few days before this.) We told him he could have ANY kind of ice cream he wanted. And do you know what he said?? (This won't surprise those of you who know him...) Green ice cream (his favorite color) with m&ms (his favorite candy) with green sprinkles (again - color & who doesn't like sprinkles?) in a cone. smile Who can say no to that?? And so - he was on! As soon as he went for really real - we'd leave that minute and go get some ice cream.

I'm not sure the ice cream "trick" actually did it for us. It seems pretty coincidental that a day later we ALMOST made it, and two days later actually did make it to the potty. It seems WAY more like he was JUST READY TO GO. And do you know - the FEW people out there who are rational and say to you, "they go when they're ready, and not before" - they just might be right!

I've really tried not to get mad or frustrated with him - I knew that wasn't going to speed things along! But when people see your cute 3 year old (who looks older because of his size) and sees you changing a diaper, they make comments like, "Oh, still working on it, eh?" (Which REALLY means, "Hm...it didn't take me that long to potty train MY kid! You're not doing it right, not trying hard enough because OBVIOUSLY I did something right because MY kid was trained by the time they were 2!!") So it's tough when the other kids around have "been trained" - or rather have "figured it out" - a little earlier. (please note that I realize that not ALL moms feel that way!) smile

Why is this potty training thing such a big deal? Well - I think that it isn't. I'd just decided DAYS before Micah finally figured it all out that he wouldn't be wearing a diaper that I'd be changing when he was 35 right before his wedding ceremony. (That's right - he's not getting married until then - and then only to the right girl...that I choose.) smile So I just figured it would happen when it would happen. And then it did. smile

So we went out, had our green ice cream with m&ms, sprinkles, and a cone...Ella ate most of the cone while Micah was chowing down on the ice cream. smile He didn't seem to mind, he usually likes to share with his little sister - especially when it keeps her quiet for a bit! And a couple days later, after he proved that he had earned it, we got the bulldozer down. smile And BOY did Micah and daddy have fun!

At least...for about an hour. Yep - you guessed it! That's how long the bulldozer lasted before it gave up the ghost. How disappointing - so you would think, right? Nope - that hasn't deterred him one bit. He still plays with it, tries to "control" it with the remote, and he still is going potty on the toilet.

So what did I learn? I should have saved my money on the bulldozer (bought the cheaper of the two of course) - and I should have relaxed and encouraged the WHOLE time. Not just at the end. Because he did it when he was ready, and not before. (and THEN we could have had ice cream!!)

By the way - we are SO proud of him! I don't think I've ever clapped louder or longer, shouted as happily, or laughed as much with him as the first time he got it to work the way he meant it to. smile And he's pretty excited too - because now he's not just Micah ...he's Big Boy Micah Ray Nixon...he gave himself that nickname!...)
