6+ S. Pacific Plateau Earthquake

, , , ...

Topography

Effectively in the middle of nowhere and not even felt by Pitcairn or Easter Island. Far off the coast of Chile, and yet above the sea floor - this is because of a continent sized plateau 3 miles beneath sea level but a mile higher than the ocean plate sea floor. Any creatures living there would be at the altitude of Denver compared to Miami, should the USA suddenly become sea floor one night.

The quake was at the edge of a bay area with cliffs that would dwarf the Grand Canyon, the undersea continent reacting just like a surface continent with it's edges faults of some sort. Looking at the weather in the area seems a strange thing to do, but the prominent swirl of cloud follows ocean current density, mass and temperatures. If sudden warm tropical meets the cold Antarctic, there would be all sorts of differentials at play over sea floor faults - not just the Sunset / Full Moonrise.

An interesting article from our bumbling friends the Scientists showing their expectations to be completely wrong again - would they even see life on Mars, one wonders.
Continuing tremors in Western China, the latest a 6.0 earthquake with 3 figure injuries, but no fatalities. A list of the last tremors in the China Eclipse Holidays post.
A day later and the Northern Marianas have a 5.5+ in the Ocean at 22N. Japanese territory starts at the Tropic of Cancer (24N) with the Bonin Islands, the Pacific Trench deep enough to lose Everest within it at -30,000ft., around 5,000 fathoms, (10,500m).

Tropical Peru's Freezing Children

, , , ...

Living in Peru

With a large part of the country at 20,000ft, the mountain villages facing the annual problem of child and elder deaths from pneumonia and cold.
The International Disaster and Relief websites highlighting the deaths of over 150 kids this season.
The problem has been going on since man swapped from watching the Cosmos at the Andean Temples and switched to worshipping money and metals at centralised Capitols like Lima.
A UNICEF report from 4 years ago seemed to have the problem sorted, but the BBC still found a disaster to report in 2007.
It's all the more shame as the mini apocalypse seems to be happening amongst some of the most amazing scenery on Earth. From the Peruvian Andes through to the Amazon; from tours of the cities to the pristine beaches.

6.2 Canada / Greenland Earthquake

Thule AFB
BBC
Officially given as 100 miles from Pituffik, Greenland, out in Baffin Bay.
Smaller 5.5s in the Chilean Andes and on the Mid Indian Ocean ridge, and a jump in the average background buzz with Nicaragua, Indonesia, Turkey and Alaska prominent. No news of them internationally with bumbling marionettes of the G8 Circus counting their veal chops, asti spumante and helicopters as their people shack down in tents for the third month.

Credit Crunch Saving

, , ,

These are a series of posts that were ignored by search engines last fall when they probably could have helped some people most. I'll repost them here as the Credit Crunch seems to be slow to relax and despite several search terms, I found little of a similar nature with the siege mentality.

I haven't bought petrol since 1991. I've only just graduated to a mountain bike, too. You'll only get caught in rain 10 times a year if you use it for work. It's statistics. How often is it raining at 0800 and 1700?

SHOPS (Consuming Like A Locust)
I can't believe what other people buy at the supermarket. Bills into 3 figures! Why? I can eat on £10 wk ...6 cans of beans, a loaf, an onion and cheese slices.. The milk bill can be halved and pounds shed by saving the old container; the next one you buy, pour half into the old container and top both up with water. I can barely tell any differance and am saving $125 a year.
Shower gels, shampoos, all packed with carcinogens - give your immune system a rest and buy a simple bar of soap 4 pack.
SOLAR.
Is a very good idea for your roof, but still overly expensive for appliance charging kits - will take a year to pay for themselves. Individual solar gadgets are handy but generally need bright Sun and are duds in winters. I do have a wind up radio and flashlights, more for emergencies and the fact Horncastle electric chooses it moments to die.
TRANSFORMERS.
Some 7" DVDs, Tv's, radios etc.. run on DC through transformer plugs. These are excellent savers. A small portable Tv will typically run on 25v DC. - and of course, blogging by mobile phone is alot greener than a big computer lay out....
Some top 'Freebie' sites promise all manner of things, but I suppose it could be useful as a hobby to see what might be out there: Telegraph Top 20, British Freebies, Magic UK Freebies, Freebielist, Money Saving Expert
