7.0 Earthquake mid Sumatera, Gempa Jambi

Another large coastal quake in the Indo-Pacific, just South of Padang, which has had 3 biblical quakes in just over a month, and around 50 'smaller' aftershocks.

Hitting the town of Muko Muko and the City of Sungai Penuh, it was another shallow quake, and has added to the turmoil in the region, with a 1000 dead and seriously injured from yesterday's earthquake. The coast road was the main artery, and has been ripped out by landslides. Australian Geo has it at 6.5 and deeper than local ASEAN seismo, which is a whole different type of quake to a shallow 7.0 richter, as quoted by all the press (USGS 6.9). All Padang's spacious buildings damaged, with the shopping mall, airport, hospitals, governor's building, Suzuki & Hyundai dealerships and schools collapsed. Okezone and Mediaindonesia showing the pragmatism and undaunted spirit of the Indonesian people, but I think I'd have moved away from the Java Trench by now. Update: over 1000 deaths With thousands still buried nearly a week later, the search changed to one of disease prevention and the retrieval of corpses. Landslides, liquifaction and chasms swallowing up whole communities with ground movement the worst in living memory. A scientist in his own little world saying the Samoan and Indonesian quakes were unrelated - which is rather like saying the food you eat doesn't affect your toilet times.. An article on the same page showing how the San Andreas in California was affected by the Banda Aceh event, with changes and slippage. In the case of the Samoa & Sumatera, the push of the Pacific would have transfered immediately past PNG down the Java trench providing direct mechanical linkage. Indirectly, China, NZ, Bangladesh and Japan all became slightly more stressed by these events. Authorities already thinking of rebuilding next to the Java Trench...I can't believe they're not all moving to the NE out of harms way. Immediately after the flurry of these 4 or 5 large quakes, California had a series of 4+ and occasional 5's from San Diego to Oregon. |
