6 Lessons for Handling Stress

, ,

Friday, Jan. 19, 2007 By CHRISTINE GORMAN

Take a deep breath. Now exhale slowly. You're probably not aware of it, but your heart has just slowed down a bit. Not to worry; it will speed up again when you inhale. This regular-irregular beat is a sign of a healthy interaction between heart and head. Each time you exhale, your brain sends a signal down the vagus nerve to slow the cardiac muscle. With each inhale, the signal gets weaker and your heart revs up. Inhale, beat faster. Exhale, beat slower. It's an ancient rhythm that helps your heart last a lifetime. And it leads to lesson No. 1 in how to manage stress and avoid burnout.

Radio 4 feature on blog therapy

BEEN BROKEN- one man and 'mental illness' - an occasional diary featured on Radio 4 a couple of days ago which inspired me to start this blog more regularly.
So thanks for that

Panic atacks and CBT

, , ,

I have been undergoing CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) for the last few months for panic attacks and generalised anxiety which is very unpleasant.
So far I have resisted SSRIs.
Last week on PM (Radio 4) Oliver James came on to attack the notion that the Govts announcement of lots of new funding for CBT - talking thereapy - would be a general panacea and cure people 100% reduce need for SSRIs etc...

Radio 4 PM on CBT treatment

One of the quotes from the blog for that day (las Wednesday)

Regarding the new 'cutting edge treatment' that has been promised by the Government for depression/anxiety. I have suffered from severe depression now for a number of years. At first, I was treated by a qualified doctor - who often didn't turn up for appointments - but was reasonably good. I asked to be re-referred and was confronted by an ill-trained therapist who said, and I quote, that she could 'cure me in three visits' and in addition, I was a waste of money if I had had to have numerous visits to the previous doctor. Well, if these are the 'new' type of therapists the Government want to recruit they are going push people to suicide and nervous breakdown. Put perhaps they would like us to kill ourselves - at least it would get rid of the problem.

another comment

CBT is the new black in Mental Health. The trouble is that it works mainly for people with mild to moderate depression. It rarely really works for people with more severe forms of depression or anxiety. It also very much depends on individual personalities and who delivers the treatment.

Which West Wing character are you?

The idealistic speechwriter is well-liked by just about everyone. He's known for his excellent writing, sense of humor, and tendency to be clutzy. Although being younger than the rest of the staff, he's often treated as so, much to his dismay.

</html> I liked West Wing when Rob Lowe was in it. More about Sam Seaborn

Mercury fillings

, , , ...

I haven't blogged for a while. This is because I've been busy and also because I maintain 4 other blogs on very different subjects - typical ADDer you might say.
Last night I was watching TV when the adverts came on. I sat there and couldn't remember what I'd just been watching. I mean my mind went TOTALLY blank. I racked my brain for several minutes before the show came back on. It was one of my favourites and I'd been actively watching it; it wasn't just on in the background.

Now is this the ADD 'getting worse', stress, early senility?...or mercury fillings?
ADD doesn't get worse although you can have good or bad days. I'm no more stresses than usual and certainly wasn't then. Early senility; I'm far too young. So that leaves the mercury...

This is a recurring theme with me at the moment.
