Changes in the Pipeline

, , , ...

As I have begun work on the next album (scheduled for release in 2013) expect updates around here and various other Vacant Sky Parlor locations on the web. I will be particularly busy on the album this summer, because college demands most of my time the rest of the year. Periodically, I'll give snippets of things, etc, along the way.

Vacant Sky Parlor: Octopus Zoo (free mp3 album)

Vacant Sky Parlor: Tonight To Sea (mp3)

, , , ...

"Vacant "Tonight To Sea" is the twelfth song of the Vacant Sky Parlor album "Octopus Zoo". This is sort of the closing song of the album that washes everything away in ocean and synths. Kind of a quiet one.. drifting and sinking away.

Vacant Sky Parlor : Anchor Light (MP3)

, , , ...

"Vacant This week's MP3 is "Anchor Light, the 11th track from the Vacant Sky Parlor album Octopus Zoo. This is probably the most complicated song I've ever done, and a little on the extravagant side. It has loud and quiet, it has a little minuet, it has orchestral instruments next to synthesizer freak-outs. It has distorted vocals and miles of phase, flange and delay. I will have a B-side for this one next week.

Sans-Serif Complex Logo

Sans-Serif Complex Logo

I would like to introduce you to the new Sans-Serif Complex logo. Work on the album will begin very soon. I already have a potential album cover, posted on flickr. It may be called 'Paint Chips"

Hope everybody is having a good summer. I'm mostly bogged down with work and school these days.

Casio MT-68 Sample Pack

, , , ...

Casio MT-68 keyboard

For you music makers out there, here are some free analog drum samples for your software samplers. May it suit you well.

I bought a Casio Mt-68 keyboard several months ago for about USD$15. I mainly bought it for the percussion, but it also creates some nice sounds as well. This is actually a cute little analog keyboard that they made in the early 80s, just before they went digital. It has a surprisingly nice sound, especially when going through the line out, which is how I recorded these.

The sample pack includes one-hit samples of each of the seven percussion sounds. I identify these sounds as: Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Closed Hi-Hat, Open Hi-hat, Clave, Mid Tom, and Low Tom. There are in 24/96 wav format and there are multiple samples of each, so you can round-robin them. They have been carefully EQ'd and trimmed using Synapse-Audio's Orion and Audacity.

This is the first sample pack I've created, and I hope to continue doing more. Eventually, I'll convert the Meropis Lollipop site to host software, samples and other tools for fellow electronic musicians.

Vacant Sky Parlor : Octopus Zoo (MP3)

, , , ...

"Vacant Here's track 10, "Octopus Zoo".. the title track of the album. This is a reworking of a song I recorded as StrawBerry Yoga back in 1993. I think I gave out maybe two copies of that album ("Garbage") on tape. It was some lo-fi noise freak-folk kind of something or other. It's a strange song, seeming to meander a bit at the beginning, until it takes off into a danceable pop bit and destroys itself in a climax of noise and confusion. The bonus song is a different mix of "Octopus Zoo" that is just even noisier and stranger.

Vacant Sky Parlor : Circles (MP3)

, , , ...

"Vacant "Circles" is a laid back song with vocoder vocals. It has a bit of a 70s era Kraftwerk/Jarre vibe to it. It borrows some phrases from the classic "The Spinning Song" by Albert Ellmenreich. For that reason, the b-side is a Vacant Sky Parlor arraignment of that piano classic.

Vacant Sky Parlor : Honey Lamb (MP3)

, , , ...

"Vacant "Honey Lamb" is sort of bit of a hopping groovy song of sorts until the halfway mark it jets off into a rising barrage of descending chords and percussion. The b-side is a lo-fi sounding alternate mix in an attempt to emulate the sound of an old cassette tape copy of a vinyl record.

Vacant Sky Parlor : Eyelids Blossom Tulips (MP3)

, , , ...

"Vacant "Eyelids Blossom Tulips" is sort of a trippy song mostly based on my love of a cup of tea, and other ideas sort of thrown in. I like the music in this one a lot. The b-side is a song from the scrapped "hype!" ep project. It's an instrumental song that I feel is kin to Eyelids.

Vacant Sky Parlor : Nor a Drop to Drink (MP3)

, , , ...

"Vacant "Nor a Drop to Drink" is one of the longer songs on the album. It goes through several sections and, I think, it is a bit of journey from start to finish like a storm building. The b-side is a stripped down mix revealing primarily the background instruments.
