Vacant Sky Parlor : Octopus Zoo (MP3)

, , , ...

Here's track 10, "Octopus Zoo".. the title track of the album. This is a reworking of a song I recorded as StrawBerry Yoga back in 1993. I think I gave out maybe two copies of that album ("Garbage") on tape. It was some lo-fi noise freak-folk kind of something or other. It's a strange song, seeming to meander a bit at the beginning, until it takes off into a danceable pop bit and destroys itself in a climax of noise and confusion. The bonus song is a different mix of "Octopus Zoo" that is just even noisier and stranger.

Vacant Sky Parlor : Circles (MP3)

, , , ...

"Circles" is a laid back song with vocoder vocals. It has a bit of a 70s era Kraftwerk/Jarre vibe to it.
It borrows some phrases from the classic "The Spinning Song" by Albert Ellmenreich. For that reason, the b-side is a Vacant Sky Parlor arraignment of that piano classic.

Vacant Sky Parlor : Honey Lamb (MP3)

, , , ...

"Honey Lamb" is sort of bit of a hopping groovy song of sorts until the halfway mark it jets off into a rising barrage of descending chords and percussion.

The b-side is a lo-fi sounding alternate mix in an attempt to emulate the sound of an old cassette tape copy of a vinyl record.

Vacant Sky Parlor : Eyelids Blossom Tulips (MP3)

, , , ...

"Eyelids Blossom Tulips" is sort of a trippy song mostly based on my love of a cup of tea, and other ideas sort of thrown in. I like the music in this one a lot.

The b-side is a song from the scrapped "hype!" ep project. It's an instrumental song that I feel is kin to Eyelids.

Vacant Sky Parlor : Nor a Drop to Drink (MP3)

, , , ...

"Nor a Drop to Drink" is one of the longer songs on the album. It goes through several sections and, I think, it is a bit of journey from start to finish like a storm building.

The b-side is a stripped down mix revealing primarily the background instruments.

Vacant Sky Parlor: Halls and Walls (MP3) + b-side

, , , ...

Song 5 is here. Thumping bass and some simple and somewhat silly lyrics, with toy keyboard leads, and some latin percussion because I can. The b-side is just some toyful playing around with the same setup.

(just discovered I can use bb code in these posts to my.opera.. that makes it easier, since i announce these on forums too)

Vacant Sky Parlor: OZ: Vegetable Scream MP3

, , , ...

Track 4 is now available. It's a noisy synthesizer freakout laid atop of frantic distorted piano and some driving drums, with a short break in the middle for a nervous interlude. Pick it up!

The b-side is just a little extra noise to get you through the day.

Vacant Sky Parlor : Mind Your Hats

, , , ...

Finally, and it's about time.. I am releasing for MP3 download, the first track of the VSP mini-album 'hype!'. This little instrumental opening track is called "Mind Your Hats". It's just a simple thing loaded with reverb and overloaded through the mixer (or at least a simulation of such) to give it a washed out noisy sound. While it's not too entertaining or exciting, it would complete the set if you wanted to have the whole album, which will be served up in pieces over the next few months.

You may recall that 'hype1!' is just a little collection of goofy songs I did to take a break from working on the real album 'Octopus Zoo'. I really look forward to sharing 'Toolbox' with you, cuz it's the silly one with a good groove (I actually read a several articles and tutorials on Salsa rhythms before writing it)

JellyGirl : ShoeString BubblePack (vol 3)

, , , ...

From 1996 - 2000, I was musician half of JellyGirl, the vocalist/lyricist half was Jimmy Kisor. Up until a year or two ago, he fronted, noise-rock heroes, Kid Panda Hands, and is now the singer for the more black metal, The Goodbye Goats. We were doing music that reminds people of 90s era Ween and Beck. In 1998, we recorded little over 50 songs.. 13 of which ended up on our local cd release 'ShoeString Pop' in 1999. Here's another collection of 6 songs from back in the Day! Two of these songs were on the 'ShoeString Pop' cd, 'Voice in Me' and 'DaySeas Ankh Lovers'. 'Voice in Me' is a particularly memorable song, with one section being rather unforgettable. People seem to delight in making other people listen to it. 'DaySeas Ankh Lovers' was the first song on the cd. The title comes from my stage name during the earlier days of JellyGirl.. when I went by Daisy Clover, and Jimmy was Joey Angel. 'Hug the Snowman' is runs a little long, and is sort of a cartoony monster dirge thing. 'A Tree By KeVin's' is a goofy piece, and 'Paco's Friend' is also a joke of a song, which is actually about a friend of our's at the time who actually shares no qualities with any of the characters in the song. PC-minded folks may find 'Paco's Friend' offensive, so they might want to leave it alone. 'Thumbnail Rabbit' was one of my faves of our songs, and I wish we had re-recorded it to sound better. We never re-recorded anything, and looking back.. that's a bit of a shame.

JellyGirl : ShoeString BubblePack (vol 3)

  2. Voice in Me (7.3MB)
  3. ThumbNail Rabbit (5.2MB)
  4. A Tree By Kevin's (4.4MB)
  5. Paco's Friend (3.8MB)
  6. Day Seas Ankh Lovers (4.8MB)

This set starts off with a little synth noodle called "Enter the JellyWorld", which leads into the lengthy phantasmagoric autobiography "Birth of the SunShine Puppy". The third cut is the popular favorite "Bugs in a Jar", which appeared (in a different mix) on the cd. "Nineties Model" could've been a great anthem for JellyGirl. It's a decent song as is, but if we had actually put work into it, it probably would've been the greatest song we ever did. From there we go into "Rectal Savage", our mock parody of black/death metal. And then to "Welcome Home Fate", in a rather poor mix. This ended up being a much better song when mixed differently for the cd. Mageda Merbouh and Isaac Slater wanted to do a video for this one, but that never came to be. And finally, this volume closes with "My Crotch Is Talking", a little thing we did after a long recording session to amuse ourselves.

This may be the kind of thing you've been waiting for.

MP3 : Day-Glo Sugar

In mid October, I will be completing a Vacant Sky Parlor ep called 'hype!' in a sort of haphazard brunch between the lp albums 'Liederkreis' and the upcoming 'Octopus Zoo'. 'Hype!' will consist of 11 tracks, though not all of them are necessarily songs.

The 3rd one is a song and it's now available for download. You can head on over to the Vacant Sky Parlor site to get it, or you can just grab it here. It's not any where near as good as the 'Octopus Zoo' songs I'm working on, but it'll give you something to chew on between now and then.

Keep in mind that this vocal style isn't quite what'll show up on 'Octopus Zoo'. It's also more restrained than I had originally intended, seeing as I recorded it in our apartment with my girlfriend sleeping in the other room. My 3 1/2 year old son also recorded some vocals for it, but he couldn't keep himself from grabbing the mic and going crazy with his dances.. so mostly what I recorded from him was mic noise and the rumbling mic stand. Eh well.. maybe he'll be on the next one.
