samples, tools, WAV, Casio
...

For you music makers out there, here are some free analog drum samples for your software samplers. May it suit you well.
I bought a Casio Mt-68 keyboard several months ago for about USD$15. I mainly bought it for the percussion, but it also creates some nice sounds as well. This is actually a cute little analog keyboard that they made in the early 80s, just before they went digital. It has a surprisingly nice sound, especially when going through the line out, which is how I recorded these.
The sample pack includes one-hit samples of each of the seven percussion sounds. I identify these sounds as: Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Closed Hi-Hat, Open Hi-hat, Clave, Mid Tom, and Low Tom. There are in 24/96 wav format and there are multiple samples of each, so you can round-robin them. They have been carefully EQ'd and trimmed using Synapse-Audio's Orion and Audacity.
This is the first sample pack I've created, and I hope to continue doing more. Eventually, I'll convert the Meropis Lollipop site to host software, samples and other tools for fellow electronic musicians.

songs, song, flute, french horns
...
Last night, I really moved 'Anchor Light' from the short little noise fest it started off as, into the epic song it will become. The most important thing, which I had planned on doing months ago, was the addition of the french horns. I still have yet to add flutes to the section in the middle, but that's going to require cleaning up the samples I have (samples of single notes being played on the flute). The third section is slow and groovy, and I think it may go from that into an loud and powerful outro.. we'll see what happens. Not much time left.......
Also, 'Not A Drop To Drink' has been perfected, I worked out a few issues with the bridge, and the second section has now been written (for the most part).. so it flows nicely. Then, I just need to do a bridge from the second section into a recapitulation of the first section and a final coda of sorts. Something to close it out. Not much time left......
Most of the songs, the music is completely done.
Need to record vocals.
The Vacant Sky Parlor album 'Octopus Zoo' is nearing completion. Should be available January 8th, 2008!!!

1970s, songs, synthesizer, song
...
The other day, I was driving and listening to the latest versions of the songs, focusing on 'Anchor Light' because it's in its early stages and I'm very excited about the blast of noisy extravaganza it will become. At this point it most of it somewhat resembles 'Vegetable Scream', but only so much in the way that it's blast of noise followed by edgy softer bits. Anyway, while I was listening, I decided what I really want to do with this one.. and that's bring a bunch of horns into the noisy sections and have them end up blasting the song into a section with strings and things and something with a bit of tension.
So, obviously, I had to figure out how to get the sound I want, and I considered writing and recording all of it with a variety of synthesizers doing brass sorts of sounds. However, this isn't really going to be the effect I want. I don't want this part to be synths playing brass sounds.. I want the sound of an actual french horn and trumpet. Well, that's a problem, cuz I don't have any of these things, nor do I have the time to coordinate something with an actual trumpeter to play multiple parts.
This morning, I remembered that the
Philharmonia Orchestra of London had set up the
Sound Exchange with a sample library full of royalty-free samples of individual notes of various instruments just for this very purpose.. and I now have a collection of french horn and trumpet samples to create my virtual horns in the sampler.
As for the strings.. they have samples of those too, but I actually want and intend to use synth strings, a la 70s cheesy strings.. for your listening pleasure.
I start back at school on Monday, so time is going to be less plentiful for the next few months.. but I'm still keeping up with this album. I said the end of 2007, and I meant it.. it is coming.
On Tuesday, there will be more
JellyGirl songs available for download, come back.
