Aggressors - The new hero pulp

Reading reviews of a genre

Tag I'm it

My good mate Dave tagged me with the question "Tell us five things we didn't know about Aggressor Brad"

1) I have an autographed copy of The Lost World video signed by John Rhys Davies. It made a nice change from signing Lord of the Rings/Indiana Jones stuff for him.

2) My nickname growing up was Alby after Alby Mangels, because my surname is Mengel.

3) I once used Sherlockian deduction on someone I had just met and scared them by how much I knew. I used to work at Woolies as a trolley boy and nearby was the carpark where the clubbers would park. I noticed this car as I drove in at 7am to open the store and the car was still there at noon. I noticed that someone had kicked the car and called security. I was rather concerned about the young lady who was driving the car and told them so. I then had to explain that I didn't know the person whose car it was but the glasses and hand lotion told me it was a young female.

4) As much as I love Science fiction, crime, action adventure, I don't like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. I can't explain why, I love Buffy, Charmed, Angel, Hex, Supernatural but Harry Potter no interest whatsoever. Lord of the Rings same boat.

5) People tend to perceive me as sweet and innocent (which is unusual for a male I know) I lend them Philip Jose Farmer's A FEAST UNKNOWN, it shakes that particular notion about me. Heh heh heh!

Andy Warhol's Dracula Anno Dracula 1978-79 by Kim Newman (1999) in THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF VAMPIRES 2004 edition

, , ,

Kim Newman's Anno Dracula series is one of the more interesting alternate history series of recent times. The series started with the novella "Red Reign" in the original edition of The Mammoth Book of Vampires, where he posed the question "What if Dracula had won?" Newman then expanded the idea to novel ANNO DRACULA set in 1888 various Victorian characters become involved in Jack the Ripper murders. THE BLOODY RED BARON is set set in WW1 where an exiled Dracula has declared war on England many pulp characters appear including the Shadow, Monk Mayfair and Captain Midnight all appear. JUDGEMENT OF TEARS (aka DRACULA CHA CHA CHA) has Dracula in Rome in 1959 where secret agent Hamish Bond hunts Dracula.

For a full list of characters and stories I recommend this page

Anyway Kim Newman is back to his trick with this tale of the Anno Dracula Universe. Set in 1978 -79 this story tells the tale of Johnny Pop a vampire who declares that he is a descendant of Dracula and one of the last vampires to be sired by Dracula. Like his ancestor Pop is moving to conquer a new world - in his case America. Pop arrives in New York and starts selling his blood, called Drac it becomes the new Drug sensation.

Eventually, Johnny becomes hunted by a group of fearless vampire hunters including Blade, Shaft, Shaggy and Scooby Doo, Popeye Doyle, Hellboy, Travis Bickle (Taxi Driver), Thana (Ms .45), Paul Kersey (Death Wish film series) and The Punisher.

Now Newman only hints at these characters such as the exterminator with skull on his chest, and the architect on his own crusade to avenge a family bled dead by dhamps.

These characters are in the story for a small time but it was neat that Newman allowed a few Aggressors to team up to battle the heir of Dracula.

Casting Calls

, ,

Recently thanks to my mate DaveI was informed of a new A Team movie in the works.

I tried to come up with a good cast for this movie and failed - who I wanted to see most likely wouldn't be commerically viable and some parts cannot reasonably be recast

James Brolin as Hannibal, James Spader as Face, BA who could you cast that wouldn't be either a bad Mr T impersonation or a totally different character?, Murdock the danger is that the actor in this role would be too wacky - I've seen Jim Carrey suggested for the role but his antics would then overpower the others. This is an ensemble cast.

So I decided to look at a few other movies from Aggressor Novels

The Pentrator

How about George Eads from CSI?

Okay your turn if they were to turn your favourite series into a movie who would you cast?

MR T: The Mystery of the Disappearing Oasis (1984)

,

In 1983 Ruby-Spears cashed in on Mr T's popularity and created the MR T animated series. In the series Mr T travels around with a gymnastics team and finds mysteries. In many ways Mr T is similar to BA Baracus, not just in appearance but in personality, both enjoy helping children, both have a fear of flying (although Mr T doesn't need to be knocked out) and both use the same catchphrases.

In this episode Mr T and his Gymnastics team fly to Egypt bringing the team bus along with them (why? I don't know and I don't know why Mr T needs a coach size bus for himself, Miss Brisby and five meddling kids and the Dog Dozer)

Anyway the whole team is in Egypt to meet Kim's penpal. The penpal is the daughter of an archeologist who has given her a ruby necklace - which turns out to be the key to a treasure and naturally bad guys are tring to steal it.

Oh I pity the poor fools who mess with T or the kids. Several of the kids are running around Egypt without telling anyone where they going and one by one the baddies capture them and it's up to Mr T to stop them. I wasn't aware but it appears that Mr T is quite the gymnast able to flip and vault as well as any member of his team (who frequently cartwheel out of danger)

Lest I forget each episode has a moral - This one "tell people where you'll be"

(another one had the moral of Don't Brag - "If you're great people will know it and you won't need to tell them. Just like I don't need to tell you" a live action Mr T informs us.

Think of this as A-Team very lite and it's not a bad show.

RELIC HUNTER: The Wages of Sydney (2001)

Professor Sydney Fox is a Relic Hunter, like Lara Croft and Indiana Jones she's an adventuring Archeologist. Like all episodes of Relic Hunter this opens with a short scene showing the relic in it's orginal time frame before it disappears in this case the Dragon's Egg an ancient Chinese bomb which was used as a peace offering to destroy their enemies - a Chinese version of the Trojan Horse.

We flash forward to the present and Sydney and her British assistant Nigel Bailey are tracking down a map to The Dragon's Egg. However, a rival relic hunter Kane beats them to it and Sydney and Nigel are chasing him to China.

As Sydney and Nigel prepare to leave we discover that Sydney's PA Claudia has left for a dream job in New York fashion to be replaced by Karen. Karen gets a B plot of getting Sydney's budget approved.

Sydney and Nigel discover that Kane has fallen foul of a local warlord Shandar. After busting out Kane the retrieve the map and rush to The Dragon's Egg, with Shandar and Kane in hot pursuit.

Do they make it? Will the explosive in the egg kill them all? I'm not telling.

Sydney doesn't carry a gun but a miniture crossbow and knife and is an expert martial artist.

We discover that over the past few years Sydney has brought her university 84 relics, 19 of which have been sold to museums for over one million dollars each.

Relic Hunter sits on the borderline of an Aggressor but her adventures are funt to watch.

Mr T: I PITY THE FOOL

,

Have you ever aked yourself this question

What Would the Punisher Do? (or The Executioner, or The Destroyer, etc)

Well it appears that Mr T has a brand new show in the US - I PITY THE FOOL where Mr T helps people.

I saw this on the news the other week and the news suggests that Mr T offers people an A Team approach to their problems and really could we ask for more? (well except for Dwight Shultz and Dirk Bendict to show up).

Mr T seems to think that Dr Phil is a fool (whom of course he pities)and that the people that Dr Phil helps are fools too.

Hopefully this show will come to Australian Television so I can watch it.

Over the next few weeks I'll be reviewing a few Mr T related items including Mr T's animated series from the 80's, Mr T's comic from the 90's, as well as several A Team related items. I'll be mixing it in with other reviews such as The Death Merchant's other book, The Death Wish series and a new source of Aggressor Information I've found.

ROGUE ANGEL: Solomon's Jar (2006) by Alex Archer

,

Well I am rather grooving to this new series from Gold Eagle Books.

The heroine of this piece is Annja Creed and Solomon's Jar is the second in the series (I will be reviewing the first, Destiny, shortly) Annja is an archeologist, unlike Indiana Jones or Sydney Fox, she isn't working in at a University not is she independently weathly like Lara Croft, she works as a presenter/expert for the cable show Chasing History's Monsters, I've seen similar sorts of things on The History Channel.

Annja is a very special girl because she has Joan of Arc's sword and her destiny is to protect the innocent (and this is explained more in Destiny) which gives the series a Tomb Raider meets Witchblade type of feel.

In this installment Annja hears about the possible discovery of Solomon's Jar, which according to the Bible King Solomon's imprisoned all the demons of the world, making it kinda like Pandora's box. So she hops on a plane to see if it is the real thing and starts to discover dead bodies - something is killing anyone who had possession of the Jar. Could it be demons?

Travelling around the world, Annja keeps bumping into Aidan Pascoe, an English archeologist who is also chasing the Jar.

There are also several rival groups after the Jar -including the Russian Mafia, an English cult and a Hollywood film star.

Who gets the Jar in the end? I'm not telling but it's not who you might think and we discover that an old enemy of Annja's is backing one of the groups.

Rogue Angel is certainly an enjoyable series with a super natural flavour. Annja is growing into her destiny to face these challenges and she struggles with questions of does she punish the guilty or protect the innocent?

PENTRATOR #45 Quaking Terror by Lionel Derrick (1982)

, , ,

The first of my October Halloween series of The Aggressors meet the supernatural. In this adventure of the Penetrator Mark Hardin meets Vlad Dosadan Magarac, Count Dracula. Magarac claims to be a descendant of the original Count Dracula, who was cruelly defamed by Bram Stoker. Upset by this, Magarac has decided to use a vibrating weapon to set off earthquakes which activates a volcano chain.*

The Penetrator arrives to stop this madman, who claims to be a true vampire. He discovers that several bodies have turned up around the site of the first tremors totally drained of blood.

As if this isn't bad enough the Mafia has also arrived to stop Magarac who is disrupting their activities and there is an uprising of the local indians. The Penetrator is certainly a busy boy.

After wiping out the mobsters, who decided that killing The Penetrator would be a nice side benefit to their mission. Mark manages to subdue the Indian rebellion by getting them to help him storm Magarac's headquarters.

There is nice touch where a corrupt ATF agent working for Magarac is killed by the attacking forces is surprised that The Penetrator and his allies have automatic weapons because automatic weapons are illegal in that state.

Magarac flees and is followed by the Penetrator and the pair eventually battle using chainsaws in a forest. The image of the Pentrator and the black cloaked vampire dueling with chainsaws lopping tree limbs struck me as a very cool image and would be cool to see on film. This was the one image I had kept from my first reading of this book two years ago.

**Spoiler** to head just highlight the next bit.

Not surprisingly Magarac is killed by impalement on one of the lopped tree branches through the heart.

**End Spoiler**

So it is never clarified if Magarac is a real vampire or just one sick puppy.

A very groovy work.

* This was the same weapon seen in Penetrator #21 The Supergun Mission, now nowhere is this explained in the book. Whilst the footnote can be overused by other writers (Joseph Rosenberger to name one) it can be really handy to direct us to other books like in this case.

Assassination in Theory and Practice By Richard Camellion (1977)

, ,

In Death Merchant #56 Afghanistan Crashout, Joseph Rosenberger puts a footnote on page 80 that Camellion has written three books on unarmed combat, two are not avaialble to the public but the third has been published by Paladin Press.

Naturally curious I emailed Paladin Pressabout this work and got no reply. So inter-library loan to the rescue, but the only copy was in the Australian Federal police library - so I probably have a file as a person of interest now, but such is the dedication I have that I will accept having a file to read this work.

This book is actually written by the Death Merchant himself just as he appears in the books complete with references to the Cosmic Lord of Death. The book is an overview of assassination throughout history. Part of me imagined Chuin reading this book nodding his head at some of the points Camellion had made (such as that assassination is an art, and need not be violent) and throwing to the book in disgust that Sinanju doesn't rate a mention although Hashashins, Ninja and Thugee are all mentioned and that Camellion proposes the use of guns and bombs.

Camellion also disects a number of American assassinations such as the Kennedy Brothers and Martin Luther King suggesting a large Cuban conspiracy linking all three. Then there are examinations of other assassinations such as Leon Trotsky, Archduke Frans Ferdinand and Che Gueverra from around the world. Camellion points out that the notion of a deranged loner as an assassin is largely an American construct with assassinations being considered for a political purpose by a group being the form seen around the world.

There is little practical information in this work, which might be considered a good thing in light of what happened with Hitmanthis might be for the best.

This is an interesting sidelight on the Death Merchant series.

Getting back into the swing of it

, ,

Sorry it's been so long between posts. Coming back from San Diego wiped me out and just as I was getting back into that I caught the flu which flared my asthma right up, trust me when you can't breath, blogging takes a pretty low priority but I'm back to normal, well as normal as Aggressor Brad gets.

My plan is to add a new entry at least once a week, but we'll see how that goes.

Coming up - October with Halloween and Friday 13th will see reviews of supernaturally themed Aggressors including Mack Bolan's encounter with Cthulhu, Remo vs the vampires, and other series of interest.

I've been sneaking time to watch the Death Wish series starring Charles Bronson so I might do some Death Wish Reviews starting with Brian Garfield's original novel. I hear Garfield's sequel Death Sentence is currently being filmed.

And I have a suprise or two up my sleve.
