Aggressors - The new hero pulp

Reading reviews of a genre

The Black Samurai (1977)

, ,

This movie was based on the series of novels by Marc Olden. There seven books in that series and I haven't found any of them yet but I did fnd this movie. Most likley the movie compares to the novels in much the same way as the original Bob Kane Batman comics compare to the Adam West Batman TV series.

The movie is interesting in that it's the only movie based on an aggressor series that was made in the 70's. Jim Kelly is a good choice for the lead role but sadly the script and direction let this movie down. Jim Kelly is Robert Sand, The Black Samurai, but the movie offers no explanation as to why he is called that and where he was trained as a samurai. Sand is the top agent of D.R.A.G.O.N. but Sand takes a lone hand in dealing with Janicot a voodoo priest who has kidnapped Sand's girlfriend.

There are several fights which are quite good but the decision to dub smart alec remarks over the fights allows for much unintentional humour. Sand kills about six midgets in these fights.

This movie was goofy fun to watch but it was sadly a lost opportunity for a great aggressor movie.

Or like the Nick Fury movie compared to the character from Marvel's comics, no doubt.

Or (shocking, I know), like Remo: Unarmed and Dangerous compares to the original Destroyer series of novels (I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, simply because someone decided to actually make one based on the Destroyer novels, but, well ... it wasn't a Destroyer novel. I mean, for a start, Chuin didn't like it!)

Or, like the original Captain America movie (complete with Italian Red Skull) compares with ...

... well, you get the point.

Sad to say, when 'they' make a movie based on popular fiction (be it comics, novels - whatever), when they get it right, it's a sheer pleasure to watch. But when they get it wrong ... AARGH!

Too true Clean. In some cases I have wondered why they even bothered to use the names of the characters, because that's all that seems to be used. I know the name recognition factor is why but if your adaptation isn't going to even bother to try to use some of the aspects of why that character is so beloved, why bother? It's different if those involved have tried to capture the essence of what they are adapting and fail, at least they tried.

Personally I quite liked the Nick Fury movie, Hasselhoff played him like an older version of Michael Knight, that's the early seasons of KNIGHT RIDER before the cheese set in.

I'll offer my thoughts on REMO UNARMEDAND DANGEROUS in another post.
