That free well is the main essence of the human being, and no matter what the obstacle maybe with enough determination, wisdom, and keeping the faith will but you though.

Some people follow there instinct, some people were born leaders.

Jack got them off the island with many sacrifices like Charlie made, he lead them out, they beat the system of the island, he got the island to disappear in front of willingness.

We saw so many odd things, we saw a man shot and walk again, we saw the same man die again, and got alive, we saw a strange black smoke monster, we saw people talking to dead people, we saw different timelines, a very strange island..which is being tested and investigated, at the same time the island is testing its visitors, wither we are in reality or in some kind of simulation party, the essence of human kind appears to challenge and overcome the impossible.

Free well that drove Charlie to write his greatest hits in most novel manner, the free well that came as constant love to save Desmond from a certain death, and a one which taught and unleashed, marooned Locke not to tell him what he can’t do. The Dharma were conducting experiments on dead people, so leading back to my theory, the Oceanic flight 815 passengers are all dead and they were re-lived when they open their eyes at the beginning of every episode of season one, meaning the important ones were under experiments and this is the magic powers of the healing island, or in some way they are now in a simulation mode, the simulates their lives after the crash.
So that’s why they have to go back, and live on the island or die.

Anyway the beat the simulation and got off the island, the beat the island system for they had the free will to do it.
On the other hand the Dharma incentive committed a mistake back in the 70's while experimenting, this mistake made Dr.Chang kick his wife and son, cause he sounded like a nice family guy when he was reading to baby Miles, this may be clearer if Miles talk to his father body!!
