Free Will vs. Determinism

Today in psychology class (highschool) we discussed the debate about free will vs. determinism. For those of you who do not know what either of these things are, free will basically believes in the soul and that the mind is a conscious entity, determinism says that the mind is nothing but matter and that "decisions" are mere chemical reactions. Determinism also states that human behavior can be predicted similar to how the weather is predicted. Of course, being a philisophical debate, there is no obvious correct belief, I myself am trying to decide which one to believe and would appreciate feedback. To get the conversation rolling, I currently believe in Determinism. From a scientific standpoint the "mind" as oppose to the brain, doesn't make much sense and it's existance would be hard to prove to yourself or to others, therefore leaving me with the conclusion that it doesn't exist.
