In China millions of ordinary people remember Mao Zedong on this day in their own ways, some sing pop songs, some display Mao Zedong's pictures, tens of thousands of people would travel to his hometown in Hunan, visit his Memorial Hall in Beijing and other memorial places related with his activities across the country, all spontaneously and voluntarily, just check out this online memorial site to see how many messages are pouring out on this day. why? if one thinks it's government organized, he/she is deadly wrong. In fact the Chinese media/government is trying hard to suppress such activities/news.

In Beijing, people waiting in front of Mao Zedong's Memorial Hall in a bitter cold morning, the Hall had to extend 4 hours to accommodate people, still not enough.

Tens of thousands of people traveled to Mao Zedong's home village Shaoshan and sing "The East is Red" altogether.

My friend pfelelep wrote a post about the 56 groups with a link to a beautiful set of photos of each group wearing traditional ethnic costumes, very colorful. Please open this link to see: The 56 ethnic groups. 千手观音 Thousand-arm Guan Yin

, , , ...

Guan Yin (观音, or Guan Shi Yin) is probably the most known Buddhist figure in Chinese Buddhism among ordinary people. She is a symbol of mercy, compassion and universal love, always brings a sense of peace to people. This Guan Yin has a thousand arms extending help to people who need. You can find out more legendary stories about her here. What you see in the following video clip is a performance called Thousand-arm Guan Yin (千手观音) by China Special Art Troupe, a state run organization for handicapped people. This program was once shown on China Central Television Station (CCTV) for a Chinese New Year's Eve Celebration, almost every Chinese knew it but I missed and today I run into it on youtube...

In this performance all 21 performers are deaf, can't hear the music. How did they achieve the perfect coordination? This is how, tremendous effort. Buddhism was brought to China (about 2000 years ago) from India through the Silk Road, you may notice the costumes and dance have a flavor of different cultures from nations along the road. In case you like the performance, here is another version with different music and choreography, a bit more challenging.
