Loushan Pass

LOUSHAN PASS
--to the tune of Yi Chin O

Mao Zedong
February 1935

Fierce the west wind,
Wild geese cry under the frosty morning moon.
Under the frosty morning moon
Horses' hooves clattering,
Bugles sobbing low.

Idle boast the strong pass is a wall of iron,
With firm strides we are crossing its summit.
We are crossing its summit,
The rolling hills sea-blue,
The dying sun blood-red.

@Allison

It was written about the most difficult battle during Long March and it was a turning point. If the Red Army didn't catch the Loushan Pass 10 minutes before the nationalists, there would be no red army any more, all dead. By this battle the red army lost 30000 of its 80000 people, and the remaining 30,000 endured the most difficult Long March in human history, only 3000 of them survived and reach the destination. And it was them who led the Chinese revolution, eventually defeated nationalists, new China was born.

Sorry for late reply, no time... smile

I Understand now! Thanks. I did not know the details. My knowledge of Chinese history is sometimes lacking, but It's wonderful to learn more about what actually took place. So sad so many die, but in the end they are always remembered!

Thanks for your interest. yes, it's a remarkable and heroic journey. I had a video about Long March two years ago, it's the only English documentary I could find, I am not satisfied with its interpretation, still a lot could be learned from it. Have a nice weekend, Allison!
