Larus marinus in Portimão fishing harbour

On May 24th, 2008, I and Luís Campina found a very large Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus) in Portimão fishing harbour (Lagoa municipality, Algarve). The 2nd winter bird was notoriously larger than the largest Yellow-leggeg Gulls (Larus michahellis michahellis) and almost twice as large than the smallest Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus graellsii/intermedius). The size point out to a young male in the extreme upper size limit.

Phoenicopterus minor in Castro Marim

On February 16th, I and Luís Campina found an adult Lesser Flamingo (Phoenicopterus minor) in the Cerro do Bufo saltpans (Castro Marim). It was initially found at 10:30 a.m. on the South-eastern side of the saltpans and later on it was relocated in the West side at 13:30 p.m.

There are at the present date, four accepted records by the Portuguese Rarities Committee (Comité Português de Raridades – Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves):

- 1 adult, Vasa-Sacos, Tejo Estuary (Santarém), May 13th, 2000 (C. C. Moore in Costa et al. 2003);
- 1 adult, Samouco, Tejo Estuary (Setúbal), January 21st, 2001 (L. Gordinho and L. Reino in Costa et al. 2003);
- 1 adult, Ilha da Murraceira, Figueira da Foz (Coimbra), June 15th, 2005 (D. Rodrigues in Jara et al. 2007);
- 1 adult, Samouco saltpans, Tejo Estuary (Setúbal), December 2nd-13th, 2005 (A. Rocha in Jara et al. 2007).

Up to 2004 there were 12 accepted records for Spain, 11 for Continental Spain and 1 for the Canary Islands (De Juana 2006).

Larus hyperboreus in Arade Estuary

On February 10th, i've seen a Glaucous Gull (Larus hyperboreus) flying east in Portimão Downtown. It was as very large gull, much larger than Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus). The bird was very paller, looking light cinnamon. I beleave it could be a 1st. Winter.

On March 15th, i and Luís Campina, have seen the same bird in Portimão Fishing Harbour (Docapesca) and it was a 1 calendar year bird. The same bird was seen on March 23rd.

Probably the same bird is being seen on Doca Pesca Harbour (on the eastern side of Arade river), since January 11th (http://aves.team-forum.net/raridades-f14/1st-w-glaucous-gull-at-porta-pesca-de-portimao-t475.htm?sid=2140650a918ca2d802cf4229e228d59f).

Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis in Castro Marim

On January 19th 2008, I and Luís Campina have recorded a winter plumage female Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis) in Esteiro da Carrasqueira (concelhos de Castro Marim e Vila Real de Santo António).

It probably is the same bird recorded on December 23rd 2007 (Peter Dedicoat, June Taylor, Georg Schreier, Ray Tipper in Noticiário Ornitológico da SPEA).

The same bird was seen on January 26th

Seen again on February 16th.

Eastern Greylag Goose Anser anser rubrirostris in Castro Marim

On January 19th 2008, I and Luís Campina have found a Greylag flock with 20 birds on a small wetland south of Aroucas bordering Cerro do Bufo saltpans (Castro Marim). One of the birds presented a pink bill, which was more compact and heavier than the others geese. The bird looked slightly bigger, heavier and with longer neck. The head and neck were greyer and in flight the under parts were a little paler.

The bird appears to belong to the Eastern race of Greylag, Anser anser rubrirostris. But a hybrid between the two subspecies should be considered.[/FONT]
