Phoenicopterus minor in Castro Marim

On February 16th, I and Luís Campina found an adult Lesser Flamingo (Phoenicopterus minor) in the Cerro do Bufo saltpans (Castro Marim). It was initially found at 10:30 a.m. on the South-eastern side of the saltpans and later on it was relocated in the West side at 13:30 p.m.

There are at the present date, four accepted records by the Portuguese Rarities Committee (Comité Português de Raridades – Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves):

- 1 adult, Vasa-Sacos, Tejo Estuary (Santarém), May 13th, 2000 (C. C. Moore in Costa et al. 2003);
- 1 adult, Samouco, Tejo Estuary (Setúbal), January 21st, 2001 (L. Gordinho and L. Reino in Costa et al. 2003);
- 1 adult, Ilha da Murraceira, Figueira da Foz (Coimbra), June 15th, 2005 (D. Rodrigues in Jara et al. 2007);
- 1 adult, Samouco saltpans, Tejo Estuary (Setúbal), December 2nd-13th, 2005 (A. Rocha in Jara et al. 2007).

Up to 2004 there were 12 accepted records for Spain, 11 for Continental Spain and 1 for the Canary Islands (De Juana 2006).

There does seem to be tendency to think that most Lesser Flamingos in Portugal are escapes from captivity. The bird seen at Lagoa dos Salgados in March 2007 had a ring that more or less confirmed its cative origin, but the one found at Castro Marim on 1st July 2007 did not. It will be interesting to see what the Comité Português de Raridades say about that one and this latest bird, which presumably wasn't ringed (I can't see one in your photographs). There doesn't seem to be any reason not to accept them both given that four previous records have been accepted.
