Another bit of news from Adobe!

They just released
beta version of Alchemy - a C/C++ to Flash compiler, based on the
LLVM Compiler Infrastructure. It is able to compile your C/C++ code into ActionScript 3 byte-code and this opens new oportunities for Flash platform as many "traditional system" developers can join in.
A few months ago I was speculating in my Russian blog at Livejournal that some day Adobe will make an operating system out of its Flash. All the new stuff inside Flash 10 (hardware acceleration, filter scripting, etc), AIR and now support for such a widespread language - I already see it coming. Maybe not in a traditional way, but Flash platform just got new ground to stand on...

So let me contribute to the Adobe-craze happening all around. Adobe's annual MAX user conference gave us a lot of interesting information. First of all look at
this video. What's that? A full-blown
Flash 10 on
Android! A kind of beta for now, but it works!
Next one - pre-release version of
Flash 10 64-bit for Linux! Many Linux users will definitely like that one. You can download bits from
Adobe Labs and read
developer's blog post on issue.
And that's not the end of Adobe news (: AIR 1.5 is now available, new Flex Builder and Catalyst (formerly known as Thermo) announced and Cocomo (cloud computing initiative) is now an open beta. More details on that you can find at
eWeek.

software, adobe, flash, news

If you visit
Adobe Labs sometimes then you should notice that they made
Flash Player 10 Release Candidate two days ago. So, what's inside?
First of all Adobe integrated
Adobe Pixel Bender. That means developers can program their own visual effects now and those effects will be hardware accelerated (if possible on user's PC). Since Pixel Bender is a hardware accelerated thingie, developers also get 3D support (: PC games will move to Flash? Maybe...
Next cool thing is advanced texting support: text layouts, ligatures, etc. A very welcomed addition! Looks like Flash plugin will have somekind of limited PostScript support.
And last, but not least - new sound API, which allows more control over sound. Separate application level audio mixing and audio filtering right there right now in Flash 10 Player RC!
I did not yet install nor player nor Flash IDE, so I can't say if those new features are really worth upgrading or they really work, but it looks like Adobe is one step closer to build their own operating system. They have
AIR, they have Flash with hardware acceleration and Flash player is most used browser plug-in and most used virtual machine. And yes, I hope they will make an OS (:
