Navy Blue Shell - First Test

Slept quite early yesterday. Woke up quite early today. Cleaned the room, Which is a little messy for a room that have only been occupied for 3 days. Taking the dictionary with me, although I won't be able to use it in the morning's test. Academic English Placement Test, The top 10% of us will be entitled the opportunity to take a Oxford and Cambridge Test, Which will lead to another whole new world. Although I really don't know how the O&C test is like, I do know I won't do too bad in the English placement test. After all, I have so many Opera friends behind me and they don't necessarily have :D But really, talking to you lot these years have been very helpful for my English language. I appreciate that guys.
It starts 9:45 today so I guess I still have a few hours to prepare for the first test since I landed in London. Well, technilly. I have the feeling that I have been tested the moment I left my father's embrace in Shanghai, went beyond the Chinese border, rose high above the clouds, into the unknown land where my destiny is yet to be unveiled.
And today, I will be grabbing the corner of the veil tightly in my hands.
Just wait and see!

Went past a small garden yesterday. Forgot its name, but the flowers are quite new to me; I haven't seen the British species of this flower... What's its name in English?...

The leaves are somewhat no less beautiful than the flowers..

Just this garden to the left of the road.

The sun peaked out of the heavy clouds for two minutes yesterday, so I took a picture of him:D

And don't you think the UK police is quite strange to ask Chinese citizens to register with them within 7 days of arrival? The Japanese classmate of mine doesn't need to register... and damn that place is far... 10 underground stations away... and the registration fee...
Well, a rule is a rule, I comply...

My wife had all the same adventures you're having, only 9 years ago! I think things are much the same only quite a bit more expensive now.

If you're going on the Tube a lot, make sure you get an Oyster card to save money, time and hassle. You probably alreay have one, but just in case

Hi dude,
Yeah I just bought one... With 7 pounds in it, I have to top it up again soon... Tube here is EXPENSIVE!~~~ Well, hmm.

Peter James Batty 25. September 2008, 10:22

Everything's expensive down here, sadly. However, the Oyster is the cheapest way to go. If you go through several Zones each day it might be worth asking for a season pass, which might work out cheaper. I'm not completely sure on that since I don't go into London every day.

The Tube is ok, but when I went on the MTR in Hong Kong it was several steps above what we have here. Much bigger, cheaper, faster, cleaner and cooler. Almost like they had a checklist of things to do better than London or anywhere else.

For people in HongKong, it is essencial to keep their mobile phones constantly working, so anywhere in the underground is covered by mobile phone signals. Same as Shanghai. But here in London, I got disappeared once I'm in the tube:faint:

However, the Oyster is the cheapest way to go.

Even better to get it from one of the many little newsagent-shops

张弛 Sir AzureTimm, Kingdom of Love 26. September 2008, 18:24

The little shops where you can top up your vodafone?...:D

lokutus_prime 26. September 2008, 22:44

Timm, yes - Some times you can also do this, but I'm referring to the little shops run by asians. They form a valuable part of the London community and they often are able to supply just about anything and everything that a student, and anyone else, would need to make his/her life just that little bit better. They are truly deserving of the description "convenience shops" and the traders are simply "shopkeepers" who usually give excellent service. Dear Timm, I am glad to see you are not only surviving but rapidly learning your way around the city of my upbringing

张弛 Sir AzureTimm, Kingdom of Love 27. September 2008, 05:17

Haha, you mean that kind of shopkeepers that claim "given enough money, you can buy white house"? No Loku, pity I haven't met one of them yet:( I am in a little need of a kind of Chinese sauce to add some taste to the lamb they provide here... Ah well.
Haven't been to Chinatown of London yet, I bet they must have it there... Today's Saturday, wonder the banks open for new account application today?...
Surviving is simple; Chinese people are known to survive many dire situations with ease; but more than surviving is difficult. Language difference-- no matter how good my English scores are, I am still a foreigner; Culture shock-- Think about the photos:D; Different time zones--I still suffer from time zone difference a little, sleepy early in the night, awake early in the morning. Different way of thinking-- THAT's the problem. I went to the Fresher's Fayre yesterday and Everybody is talking about going to party, everyone is signing up for clubs, everyone is so into socializing that I feel a little out of place. In fact, the girl next door held a big party last night and I felt really strange, some 14 people in a very small room, all drinking and dancing to very loud music... Quite unimabinable before. Ah well, I guess it's a part of being "western". I never socialized this way:D
Still reading the student's handbook. Boring, yet very important, I have to memorize it...
Take care, Loku~~~

Chinatown is great and you'll find everything you need for Chinese cooking. The restaurants are pretty good too and worth a visit.

The social aspect of university over here can be a bit of an eye-opener, but perservere and don't dismiss the parties. It's an important part of the whole experience and fun to look back on in later years. I've been there and done all that, twice!
