Heart Shell - Let There Be Love

300,000 people lost their home. 30,000 people lost their lives. 1,300,000,000 Chinese people's heart clenched tightly for the terrible loss.
Please, in honor and memory of these innocent lives, please have three minutes' silence. We Chinese people sincerely appreciate your support, disregarding your nationality, your political beliefs, your everything that's unimportant now.
Thank you.
==============
When the earthquake happened, I was having an English class. Because the class was in 2nd floor (1st floor for British people, who call the 1st floor "ground floor"), and Shanghai is thousands of kilometers from epiccenter, we didn't even feel it. However, more and more noise in the corridors did catch my attention. At that time I didn't know it was earthquake. The students on higher level of the building felt the shaking and evacuated. Later I heard that many evacuated via elevator, which was very wrong. Later when class was dismissed, I saw many students running out of the door. Didn't realize still. But as I entered my dorm and turned on my computer, a little pop-up message in the corner of the screen frozed me entirely.
Earthquake. In Sichuan. China. 7.6 magnitude.
Returning to my senses I quickly grabbed my phone, found the number of my friends who were studying in Sichuan. Anxiety filled my whole heart. Silence. That 10-second silence seemed to stretch into infinite. Then, a female voice told me, Network busy.
Starting to get panicked, I called my friend in Fudan. He told me he couldn't get connected to our friends either.
Heart turning to ice, I quickly sent a bunch of messages to my friends all over China, asking for info.
No. Nothing. Communication was completely cut off.
2 hours passed in chaos. My beloved friends! Where were they?
Then a miracle. When telephone network went completely out of service, internet still worked. One of my friends in Sichuan managed to tell me via QQ, a Chinese instant messenger, that they are okay, just a little minor scrapes.
Relieved, I asked how was the situation. Silence. Silence again.
Later I knew a serious aftershock struck and internet connection was out too.
Knowing prime minister Wen Jiabao was already on plane to Sichuan, my heart settled a little.
But I didn't know that, Sichuan had already turned from heaven it had been into hell it was.
===========
Highways and roads completely destroyed.
Bridges snapped into halves.
Mountains collided together and completely buried a whole county in the valley.
All communications lost to several counties.
Buildings torn into piles of rubble, taking thousands of innocent lives with them.
I didn't believe hell existed. Now I believed.
===========
Someone please tell me this is just a terrible nightmare. I will wake up to find myself late for the first class of Monday...
A devastating sad cry in the corridor shattered my last drop of slim hope.
One of my classmates just lost a relative.
=========
Images of hell crudely ripped my heart out with icy cold claws, shattered it into pieces.
No. No. No. No! This CAN'T BE HAPPENING TO China! No! China had already suffered too much!
Will god listen to me? Stop killing so many innocent people!
=========
Instantly-refreshing death toll on the screen was god's only reply to my prayers.
=========
People's Liberation Army moved more than ten thousand soldiers in one day.
But they were unable to reach the areas which sustained the heaviest blow due to severe weather conditions and extremely complicated land conditions.
So that's your reply, god? Pour heavy rain at time like this?
===========
Ancient poet Li Po once wrote a poem about the mountain roads of Sichuan. The most famous verse was something like, "roads in Sichuan is as difficult to climb as the road to heaven."
For once, I hate Li Po for being so honest.
=========
15 parachute soldiers landed successfully into the epiccenter. It was considered as Mission Impossible in this severe weather. No visual confirmations. No ground guidance. Nothing. They're trading life with lives.
=========
Heavy machines are unable to reach the most needed areas. Thousands of soldiers climbed over the collapsed mountains, in persuit of lives.
=========
Students lined up in front of our school hospital to donate blood. Soon they were told that the blood bank was full.
I opened my wallet, poured every last coin into the donation box.
Rescue persisted..
It's a battle against the god of death.
========
Air strike sirens pierced all our pained ears.
China stopped for three minutes.
When the siren died away, I raised my bowed head. I see my classmates wiping tears off their faces through my own tear filled eyes.
=========
May the dead rest in peace. May the ones who lived be strong, and treasure their lives...
My heart, all our hearts, my thoughts, all our thoughts, my sorrow, all our sorrow, has been focused on China and its people over the last seven days. No mere words of mine can ever match the tragedy, the disaster, the sheer horror of what has happened.
But my words can pay tribute to the heroes - the people of China. My words rise up, with thousands of others around the world, in a collective cry of anguish for all the lives lost, all the wounded, all the orphans, all the bereaved.
Oh Timm, dear young friend and good man. How can I and all others beyond China tell you in mere words of our sadness and shock over what has happened.
This is not just a time to invoke prayers to a deity - though I believe that thousands upon thousands of such prayers have and are being said for China and its people. This is also a time to reach out across distances, over oceans, above mountains, and into the hearts and minds of the families of China and the distressed and suffering that are being tended to.
Timm, may your great country be healed. May the dead be buried in sorrow but with honour for their lost lives. My heart and all the hearts of everyone everywhere sends love and profound consolation for the inestimable loss caused by this natural but terrible disaster.
China, dear China, your brothers and sisters everywhere are with you in spirit, mind and thought. We salute your bravery. We share your sorrow. We give heartfelt wishes for your recovery. We pray for your fallen. We hope for the trauma to fade over time but for the memory of lost and loved ones never to be forgotten, always to be cherished and revered. China, we are with you at this hour. Your pain is our pain.
With love and our heartfelt wishes for all, dear Timm.

After The Earthquake
Dear God, after the tremble, what is left?
Death and destruction beyond imagining,
Shattered villages and buildings,
The empty stares of those
Who have seen everyone they love buried away.
Where are you in such sorrow?
Your Son said that to find your face
We need only look at the hungry, the thirsty,
Those without shelter, those who are sick.
If so, then the face of God calls out to us
From the victims of the earthquake disaster.
Give us the strength to meet their gaze and respond.
Give us the courage to risk sharing that they might begin to rebuild their lives.
Amen.

SINGAPORE : A few groups in Singapore have come together to put up a special three-hour charity concert to raise funds for children who have been orphaned by the Sichuan earthquake.
The concert will be held this Sunday, and will be beamed "live" from the MediaCorp studios on Channel 8 at 7pm. A repeat telecast will be shown on June 1.
The earthquake in Sichuan has left many children with an uncertain future.
And hoping to help them rebuild their lives, organisers of the charity concert aim to raise money to build orphanages or schools.
Yeo Guat Kwang, Advisor to Sichuan Earthquake Charity Show and MP for Aljunied GRC, said: "It's quite sad to see that they have lost their parents, and support from the family. It's important for us to help them to continue, to stand up and move on."
The organisers of the show are Unusual Productions, Scorpio East Holdings and Novena Holdings, while the producer is MediaCorp.
The idea for the concert came about on Monday and since then the organisers have wasted no time. They have less than a week to put together a show that would normally take several months.
Well-known singers from the region have been invited for the show - which will include Gary Cao from Malaysia and Singapore's J J Lin, as well as MediaCorp artistes and presenters.
After giving viewers a first-hand account of the destruction in the region, Channel NewsAsia's China Correspondent Wong Yee Fong will give a "live" report from Sichuan, talking about the people she encountered; while Chinese students and workers in Singapore will also be invited to share their thoughts.
Meanwhile, the rescue team from the Singapore Civil Defence Force will return from their mission in China this week and share their experiences.
Organisers have not set any donation targets, but previous fundraising concerts have raised at least S$3 million, and they hope that this time it will be no different.
The Chinese Embassy will work with the relevant agencies on the ground, so that the money can be directed to where it is needed most.
Members of the public can call 1900-1125121 for a S$6 donation; 1900-1125122 for an S$18 donation, and 1900-1125123 for a S$50 donation.
They do not have to wait till Sunday to donate. They can start calling in from midnight on Wednesday, and donation lines will remain open till June.
Meanwhile, Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng on Wednesday signed the condolence book for the Sichuan earthquake victims at the Chinese Embassy in Singapore.
Mr Wong, who is co-chair of the Singapore-China Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation, offered his deepest condolence to the victims and families of the earthquake disaster. - CNA/ms
