Alabama Commercials

I don't think I've said anything about it yet here in the LJ, but goddamn I'm glad Alabama hired Anthony Grant.
That was one of three commercials for UA that aired during the A-Day game, which was nationally televised on ESPN. Here is the first commercial with Coach Grant. And here is the football commercial:
This... is Alabama football.

I love me some Jason Whitlock

The most passionate supporters of Title IX are the overpaid women's basketball coaches who play in front of volleyball crowds and get paid every two weeks as if they're filling Michigan's football Big House.

-- Jason Whitlock

That said, I'm pretty sure the UA volleyball team gets bigger crowds than the women's basketball team, bwahahaha.

Oh, what the hell. I'm gonna go look it up.

.......

Damn, I was wrong. Looks like average attendance at volleyball is 600 and women's basketball is 1,400. Oh, well. The joke is still funny because women's basketball sucks. I declare it so.

Btw, the women's basketball team won their first SEC game last Sunday in about 45 tries. The losing streak went back to Feb. 2006.

Re: Basketball coaching vacancy

I would love to hire Tubby Smith away from Minnesota, but there's no way we match or better his current $3 mil salary, and no way he leaves if we don't.

Therefore, I recommend we put Saban in charge of basketball during the spring. Any fool can coach hoops during the non-conference month of December. Then, after football wins another national championship, Saban can stroll over to Coleman and guide the basketball team through SEC play.

I think it's a solid plan. Roll Tide.

Alabama RPI rank this week: 137 (between Rider and Robert Morris). Oh yeaahhhh.

Roll Tide?

Bama basketball won a game today. If that isn't shocking enough, it was against an SEC West team (LSU). That doesn't mean I'm all aboard the Gottfried train again. The Tide is 11-4 (1-0), with losses against Mercer, Oregon, Texas A&M, and Clemson, but if you actually see us play, it's pretty wretched.

I already wrote about firing Mark Gottfried in lj community - roll_tideroll_tide, but it doesn't look like anyone actually hangs out in that community anymore. Sad.

In unrelated news, if you wanna hear Tim Brando go off on some idiot Auburn fan while on Finebaum, check it out.

And everyone... don't get Chizz'd.

Scored free tickets to the Bama basketball game Sunday afternoon so I can watch us lose to LSU live and in person. Suuweeet. Bonfire at Stephen's Duncanville chateau tonight.

Kick back and listen to some China Cat Sunflower, and scroll up and down with your mouse scroll wheel or the up/down arrows on the keyboard while staring at the album art in the video. Psychedelic, man. (Doesn't work with smooth scrolling.)

I won my first fantasy hockey championship. Only two took tries! I was going to compile a whole list of stats to prove just how awesome \o/ was. (Stuff like #1 in goals, assists, power play points, goalie wins, etc.) But then I decided no one cared! I now have three championships total - two football and one hockey. Time to get it together in baseball! Sonic Death Monkey, don't let me down!

I am without my desktop computer for a couple of weeks while my video card is being replaced. It worked fine, but the fan buzzed a lot and that got annoying fast. Bummer.

No one in the entire country could have predicted Memphis would lose because of poor free throw shooting. Oh, wait...

The Detroit Red Wings begin their playoff series with the Nashville Predators this Thursday. I'll get to watch it before my shoot, huzzah!

A-Day is this Saturday! I just spent 10 minutes trying to find the attendance for Auburn's A-Day two weeks ago, but couldn't find anything. Combine that with the fact that every picture and video clip I saw had empty seats showing, and I think it's safe to assume they didn't have 92,000 people. Or anything in the neighborhood. Or anything in the state.

Spring Break '08

I can't believe I'm 27 years old and still get a spring break. Working for a university definitely has its perks!

That said, I haven't accomplished much. I basically did nothing but sleep on Monday. What a waste. At least on Tuesday I measured the living room and ordered some white speaker cable so I can finally run the rear speakers without it looking bad. That should get here tomorrow. Last night I took advantage of the Mugshots dollar beer special... seven times. It's a freakishly good deal. Thanks to Cayla, Gabby, Paige, Grant, and Jamin for making it out. Also, three cheers for Trey the bartender!

Today I cleaned the apartment for Mom's visit this weekend. The kitchen and living room are all done. That just leaves my bathroom. Eh.

Seems like everyone is at the beach! I don't even like the beach, really, so I am not jealous. I half wanted to drive up to Memphis yesterday and hang out on Beale St. Buuuut I didn't. And there was no Talisma customer conference this year, so I didn't get my annual Miami trip.

I wasn't excited about basketball at all until yesterday. I'm still not totally excited. Just enough to watch whatever is on. I did not have Georgia picked to advance past the first round, but I admit I felt myself pulling for them a little. They really were an amazing story. Left for dead, then won the SEC Tournament for the automatic bid. Wish Bama could play like that. Kentucky almost came back to win their first round game against Marquette, but didn't. Kent St. didn't even show up. Lousy Golden Flashes.

I made two brackets. One has Memphis beating Tennessee for the championship, and the other has Vanderbilt beating UCLA. Memphis and Vandy all the way!

Ok, back to watching No Country For Old Men. (On Blu-ray!)

Yada yada yada...

I recently asked ESPN's resident curmudgeon, Beano Cook, to comment on the state of the SEC's coaches, and he didn't disappoint with his retort.

"If the coaches were generals in the Pentagon, the thing in Iraq would be over," Cook said. "These coaches are unbelievable. You know what this is like? It's like having six generals competing against each other to see who rules the world. That's what the Western Division of the SEC is like. You have MacArthur, Napoleon, Caesar, Lee ... six armies in that one division competing against each other to see who is going to rule the world." -- Paul Finebaum

There was no real expectation for Bob Knight to wax poetic about becoming the first coach in Division I history to win 900 games. Last week, before losing to Oklahoma State in his first shot at the milestone, Knight had said, "Who cares about 900?" Earlier this month, he publicly dissed Eddie Sutton's questionable quest for 800 wins at San Francisco. And so, in a news conference after Wednesday night's upset of No. 9 Texas A&M in Lubbock, when Knight was asked for a few words about reaching the mark, he offered this terse line:

"I'm goddamn glad it's over." -- Luke Winn

A local television station in Green Bay is doing its part in the gamesmanship war between the Packers and the New York Giants by scrubbing its usual showing of Seinfeld -- a favourite show of Giants quarterback Eli Manning -- on the eve of Sunday's NFC championship clash.

In a video on its Web site (myfoxnewisconsin.com), WLUK station general manager Jay Zollar points at the camera and says, "Eli, no Seinfeld for you!"

"We do not want to give any comfort to the enemy when they are in town," Zollar says in the video message. Giants veteran defensive end Michael Strahan was stunned when told of the Green Bay TV station's strategy. "Do they realise they have Seinfeld DVDs? We can always watch Seinfeld."

"If they think that's going to mess him up I've got to move to Green Bay. I could be very successful there with some of my ideas." -- The Guardian
