Truckenees - Lesson No. 5

,

This is lesson number 5 in my series “Truckenees”, how to speak the trucker lingo.

Remember, the following is not just for the CB radio. These terms and phrases are part of the everyday language of the modern trucker.

Extra tip: Saying "Break" is a polite way of interrupting a conversation on the CB radio

This week:

“Yard Stick” - a mile marker found along side of the interstate

“Takin' Your Picture” - refers to law enforcement using a speed detection device to determine the speed of a vehicle

“County Mountie” - a law enforcement officer from a county, a sheriff, a deputy sheriff

“K-Whopper” - a nick name for a Ken-worth truck

Now, let us use these new terms in a sentence, shall we.

“ Hey east bound K-Whopper, I saw a County Mountie at the 39 yard stick who's gonna be takin your picture ”

I have so many wildly inappropriate terms for you to define. I just can't bring my self to muddy up the joint.

I LOVE your Truckenees lessons!!! We just made a trip to Canada and back - lots of trucks on the road! I saw one of yours, you described what it looked like and I was able to recognize it right away. Made me think about what you described about sin being covered with the blood and all. It wasn't you driving... I looked!!!
Thanks for the lessons!

Mountain Mama writes:

You make it sound like so much fun I was tempted to run right out and get me a CB radio just so I can use some of the lingo you are teaching us. However, I imagined how it would look...a wrinkled old gray haired woman driving down the road chewing bubble gum and blowing bubbles, (Yes really I do that) and shouting all these new words into that thing-a-ma-jigger you talk into, and I thought better of it. I do admire you truckers but I'm not cut out to be one. I'm just a grandma person. However my best friend, (A lady) who is the same age as me drove eighteen wheeler's for several years. I'm sure she would know some of the trucker talk.
Thanks for another lesson.
God Bless you!

Hello there BDG,
I've enjoyed reading your posts on trucker lingo (my brother-in-law has been driving big rigs of all sorts since his military days). I have tons of respect for his skill and stamina (and most everyone else who trucks for a living).

Years ago my B-I-L loaned me a CB unit to install in my 4-wheeler delivery van. The very first day the alternator went at the end of a long round-about trip on a cold winter's night on the 401 here in Ontario. I flagged down an eastbound propane tanker who phoned a towing service for me. A tow truck was behind me in 20 minutes to haul me back to the shop! It was providential to have it that day. It helped immensely to keep tabs on weather and traffic and detours on future days.

One thing I found out though: I don't think ANY trucker likes to be called "good buddy"! It shows how much of a super trucker you really are.

With admiration,
