Venice carnival is very famous the world over. Usually starts mid-february and ends on mardi gras (the day before the start of the lent in catholicism). It's one-of-a-lifetime experience. If you ever get the opportunity, you should go. And Venice is such a charming city with it's canals, old palazzos and no cars!
