Colours !

, , , ,

Colours are an essential part of life ! There is very rarely 100% pure black or white.

When I was in art school, one of my teachers said that the pure white and black are actually very rare. They are usually tinted with another shade, be it yellow, blue, magenta (the "elementary" colours as they are called)... And I find that when looking closely at "things", there is usually a very slight tint. For instance, haven't you ever put two black clothes and when in the sun the two look different? One can have a green hue and the other a blue one...

At art school I have also learnt that using the three elementary colours only you get spectrum of what is called the "complementary" colours: purple complementary colour is yellow, orange complementary colour is blue (cyan), etc... The principle is simple : Elementary colour + elementary colour = one elementary colour left on its own. You get purple by mixing blue and magenta, the elementary colour left is yellow. The same goes for orange (magenta + yellow) the complementary is blue because it's the third elementary colour which did not enter in the composition.

This understanding gave me a further insight into photography and how colours interact to give a whole impression, an atmosphere.

And what about the famous Black and White combination?

To be a bit boring and technical here - when I did a Montessori teacher training course many moons ago, we learned how to introduce the concept of colours to children from primary, to seconday, to complementary colours etc. One teaching tool I remember that was fascinating was a colour wheel (you can get them in paint shops) and what you can do is follow the wheel round and see how the colours change but also you can take one colour and look at it's direct opposite (like looking at a clock and comparing the big hand at 3pm and the small hand at 9pm - am I being totally confusing, totally patronising, or just totally on-my-own-planet?? (no comment Christel!!) and if you take these two opposing colour you get the best contrast/combination and this is what a lot of good design is based on. A trick of the trade.... For instance you'll see aubergine opposite lime green (not a favourite of mine) and then terracotta opposite aztec blue. That was just a random thought I thought I'd share - a rambling from my head - but isn't that the whole point of a blog??? Have a nice day and open your eyes and notice the colours.... (surely room for a posting about nature and what colours you naturally find grouped together; how many shades of green exist in any one garden; how do you judge the perfect colour for skin when drawing someone's face - or more interestingly - how do children perceive this (often you see drawings with bright pink/orange faces etc...). Some questions to ponder on - all colour related of course.... far be it for me to wander far from the point.....

I agree with you Laura: these colour combinations are the ultimate contrast! And I do like the aubergine-lime green combination ;-) I think it's very striking, like all the others but this probably one of my favourites! As for rumbling: I like your rumblings!!! So keep going (despite what I might sometimes hint...)wink
