Twilight?

I've been rather sceptical about reading Stephanie Meyer's books ever since i heard about them a few years ago. I admit i read a few pages from twilight and it's well written and quite interesting, but it's about vegetarian vampires who sparkle in the sunlight. That's lame.
Now i Wiki'd 'vampire' and apparently vampires have been portrayed in so many ways BUT none were seen as sparkling sissies. Why are authors turning vampires into sexy tragic heroes? Come on!
All my girl friends love Twilight and are kinda forcing me to read it, but the sparkling just put me off, and the fact that it's romance doesn't help.
Oh and how the bloody hell do vampires have babies if they're supposed to be dead? Isn't that why they turn others?
Oh yeah and did you know that way way back in the day tuberculosis was called consumption and was thought to be a form of vampirism? Interesting fact.
Jeez i sound like some geek. Vampires are not real... But still fascinating.
