Article taken from Alexndra Hospital,Singapore 1930’s to 1970’s : British Military Hospital Established in 1938, Alexandra Hospital served as the principal hospital for the British in the Far East and was known as the British Military Hospital. After World War II to the 1970’s, Alexandra Hospital remained as one of the most modern hospitals in Singapore right to the 1970s. In its heyday, Alexandra Hospital was an institution that adopted cutting-edge medical technology and was the first hospital in South East Asia to successfully perform limb re-attachment to a patient. Alexandra Hospital was also renowned for some of the well-known medical expertise. These include: • Sir Roy Calne, an international renowned transplant surgeon • Major A.P.Dignan, a world famous transplant surgeon and professor of Surgery in the University of Cambridge , Clinical School • Sir Weatherall, Regius professor of medicine and Honorary Director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine at Oxford University 1970's to 1990's: Catching Up With Other Hospitals In 1971, Alexandra Hospital was handed over to the Government of Singapore with a token sum of S$1 and was renamed Alexandra Hospital. It officially opened its doors to the public that same year. Over time, with the restructuring of more hospitals from the 1970’s till late 1980’s, Alexandra Hospital began to pale in comparison with the spankier and more modern hospitals. Patient volume suffered. 2000: A New Beginning Alexandra Hospital was restructured on 1st October 2000 and became a member of the National Healthcare Group After a major restructuring in October 2000, our facilities and services has been upgraded to serve patients better. Patients are our priority and we have gone out of our way to improve our environment and to ensure quality and safer medical service. Thanks for the photographs. My only knowledge of the Alexandra Hospital is of the World War Two atrocity, so it's good to read better things!
