JatingaJatinga , a village on a ridge, is located in the North Cachar Hills district, Assam State in India. It is famous for The Bird Mystery. Here the Birds come from different places to commit suicide. It's a natural phenomenon nobody has been able to explain. But Jatinga's mysterious annual event of migratory birds committing mass suicide has now attracted the eyes of many scientists. But not only the Migratory birds, but the local birds also do similar things here in Jatinga.
At the end of monsoon months, the mysterious behavior of birds takes place. During moonless and foggy dark nights between 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., flying birds come crashing to the ground without any prior warning. This phenomenon is not confined to a single species of birds, but almost all the birds of the region got affected.
Here the mist & fog lie like a veil around the beautiful face of the damsel from September to November. During this period, mysterious behaviour of birds takes place. However, some other conditions are also necessary for the phenomenon to occur. The air must be foggy, cloudy or misty. Slight rain, would be even better. The wind must be from south to north. It should be moonless dark nights. And the best time is between 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Various studies have been conducted to unravel the causes behind this phenomenon. The recent study shows that 44 species have been attracted to the light sources. But the reasons are yet to find out. It has been established that the birds are not attracted to the entire Jatinga Ridge but only to a well-defined strip, 1.5 km long and 200 metres wide.
Under circumstances not yet fully explained, these birds get caught in the fog and wind, get disoriented and seek solace of the light sources put out by the villagers. They hit against trees or other objects and get injured in their flight towards the light source.
What may be the exact reason?
Why they choose only a Particular period of the year?
And why 6- 9:30 pm?
Well many of us want the answer.
What You think what may be the cause???

i dont know how these external factors affect them. i think it will be very difficult to eleminate all the light source in that place.

Their lungs are connected to their wing beats. As they go into heavy mist and try to clear the ridge, the mist in the lungs makes them pass out through lack of oxygen. They try to flap faster to breathe, but it makes it worse.
In the cold mist there is no updraft to soar or glide out of trouble.
They fly in flocks, so it makes it a mass event.
Birdscarers on the ridge might cure it.
