My first home-made plaited yeast cake aka Hefezopf

I love food especially the food I grew up with in the southwest of Germany. And, apparently, my husband likes it, too happy I've been meaning to bake a plaited yeast cake (in Germany that's called a Hefezopf) for a while and finally yesterday I had a go at it. It's not very difficult to make, but with anything you do for the first time there's always room for improvement! The cake looks a bit dark, but it's not burnt...according to the recipe I've got you are supposed to cover the finished plaited dough with egg yolk which I did and which made it really dark looking. I think my oven was too powerful and next time I'll set the heat to lower than suggested in the recipe. Other than that the cake tastes exactly as it does in Germany which I'm very happy about...brings home just a little bit closer heart .

So, here are before and after pictures of my first Hefezopf headbang

My first two tomatoes made an appearance

As I was checking on my plants today I noticed to my delight that there are two precious little tomatoes growing yes I just recently bought one of those oh so magical topsy turvy thingies and since my own tomato seedlings (which I had grown from seeds) still looked pretty fragile I had decided to buy a sturdy looking tomato plant from kmart which only cost about $3 or $4. It would have been nice to see tomatoes growing from my own seedlings first, but I'm still quite excited about the ones that are growing on the topsy turvy plant.

My husband got me these beautiful flowers for my birthday and I just didn't get around to take pictures of them yet. The are called Angelonia or also summer snap dragon. The colors on them are just beautiful (my favorite colors) and supposedly they will grow all summer and even winter (of course indoors) provided they have a sunny spot. I will definitely try and get them through the winter that's for sure. Nothing's wasted around here wink

And here are some more pictures of my remaining plants...

Another tomato seedling I had bought since some of my own tomato seedlings had died after I had repotted them. I still have some left but I'm waiting for them to grow a bit more and get stronger.

Various vegetable and flower seedlings that still need to find a permanent home.

I wish I had more space to grow vegetables and flowers, but this will have to do for now.

More updates to follow..so stay tuned up

Finally the start of my garden on my balcony!

So, today, I finally dared to plant my sensitive looking vegetable and flower seedlings outside. The containers I got are selfwatering, which should help with me not overwatering them. It's been a really muggy day here, which hopefully means that there won't be any more nights bringing frost, which of course would be an absolute killer to my plants. yikes My vegetable plants (roma tomatoes, cucumbers & peppers) look pretty good and we'll see if the containers I got will be big enough for them in the end. But if I don't try I won't know. wink

Unfortunately, my flower seedlings didn't do so well...most of them have died off down I'm actually surprised at how badly they've done compared to the vegetables. I figured it'd be the other way around for some reason. Oh, well...now I know better! So wish me luck that my plants will grow and that they may bring me many fruits this summer yes banana wait

Please feel free to click on the individual pictures to get a closer look at them!

My first try at making Maultaschen...

...I had first introduced my husband to Maultaschen back in October of 2010 when he came to visit me in Germany. love Maultaschen are a German dish predominantly cooked and eaten in the south western part of Germany where I'm originally from. They can probably be compared to Ravioli - basically dough pockets filled with a secret meat filling. My husband has been on my case to make some from scratch for ages. In Germany you can get them anywhere premade but making them from scratch is a whole other story. chef All in all I'm happy with the way they came out, obviously there's always room for improvement. The most common way to eat Maultaschen after the simmering part is to serve them in a chicken broth and potato salad as a side dish.

If you ever end up with too many you can put them in the fridge over night (without the broth). The next day you can cut them up in stripes and fry them up in a pan using butter which is the way my husband likes them the most. But, I find they are almost too good to be used in that way if you make them from scratch...but, I guess, each to their own. So, here are some of the pictures I've taken...

My first drawing combining softlead pencil and colored pencils

I had an eye on this picture I drew from for a while but just never got around to draw it or wasn't in the mood for it. So, I was finally in the mood for it and I decided to draw it using a mix of regular pencils (which I've used for the face, hair and body parts) and colored pencils for the rest of the picture.

Unfortunately, my really nice colored pencils are still in Germany sad so I had to use some colored pencils of a lesser quality that I've recently bought. I will definitely get some nicer ones soon as I had a really tough time blending colors which in my opinion shows. But, nonetheless, I'm not too disappointed with the end result. I, definitely, have to practice more with colored pencils. I'm hoping to get to a point where I can confidently draw portraits in color.

No master has fallen from the sky yet, right? wizard

I did a really bad job taking pictures of the picture with my camera so I enhanced some using GIMP just to make the pictures a bit clearer. To be continued... bye

Another Update On My Little Garden!

Finally, this afternoon I repotted my vegetables so they can expand a bit more before their final destination (my balcony) smile I just hope I was gentle enough with them as I have read that seedlings don't like to be handled too much...so keeping my fingers crossed that they will thrive even more. My living room looked like a right mess no but nothing that couldn't be rectified with a little bit of elbow grease yes Can't wait until I finally get to put them on my balcony as I'm kind of running out of space to keep them indoors. My flower plants still need to be repotted which I might do in a week or so. To be continued... dragonfly bug spock

There are a few more pics here.

This one was a tough cookie...

...I just finished a pencil drawing I've done of my friend's babies (one baby being her dog happy ) who I have yet to meet in person...but that's another story. There's still room for improvement but overall I'm quite happy with the way it came out. I've never done a drawing that had people and an animal in it so I was pleased how well the combination worked. The pad size I've used is 11 in. x 14 in. The mom of the kids by the way did recognize her kids and thought that I did a really good job especially on her dog...so that was good to hear. Not sure what I'll be drawing next as I've have another date with the butcher chef (aka dentist) tomorrow, so I'll be busy nurturing my pain as my husband would put it spock

I'm back to drawing...my on and off love/hate relationship

Thanks to my wonderful and lovely husband I've picked up on drawing again happy He's giving me the luxury of time and therefore, giving me the muse to do what I started early on in my childhood. Unfortunately, way too often adulthood caught up with me and my most favorite hobby had to take a back seat. So, about two weeks ago I got myself the basics such as pencils and colored pencils (they aren't the best quality, but they'll have to do for now as all my drawing stuff is still in Germany) and so forth to get back into it. So, below are the latest projects I've been working on. I've enjoyed drawing them very much, but I still feel a bit rusty...it's been a while so it's bit like riding a bicycle...you get better with practice queen So, in reality this post is more about how much I appreciate my husband and how much I love him for the person he is than about my drawings...thanks honey love flirt heart

03/23/12 - Update on my little garden

My plants are growing the way I had hoped they would smile A majority of the seeds have developed into little seedlings such as the tomatoes, peonies, marigolds and forget-me-nots. The biggest seedling so far are my cucumber ones. I repotted them in a bigger homemade (just cut the top of a cup and made holes in the bottom) pot so they can grow more freely. No sign of pepper or lavender seedlings yet, but keeping my fingers crossed headbang It's great to see them growing so well yes Can't wait to post pics of future harvests and blossoms...wish me luck!

My proud & joy: cucumber seedlings

Update on my little garden...

So, right now I've got a tiny cucumber (about 2.5 inches) and tomato (about 1.5 inches) plant growing. I bought more seeds today such as lavender, marigold, sweet pepper & tomato and planted them.

I had also planted some flowers such as forget-me-not and pansy yesterday. Now all that has to happen is that these seeds become little seedlings dragonfly That would be too cool and a lot cheaper than buying the half grown plants. To be continued...star star star
