Getting all artsy-fartsy

,

After a good week of 10 degree weather, I'm looking forward to the predicted "heat wave" scheduled to start tomorrow--it means that it will be warm enough for me to start painting! I have a little workshop set up in my garage so I can work on my art projects, but I haven't been able to paint in there for a few months because it's been so beastly cold--and paints can't handle cold weather! Anyway, not only has the coming warm weather got me thinking about art, but also a recent discovery that the i am 8-bit Art Exhibition 2.007 will be debuting at the Game Developers Conference! When I first heard about i am 8-bit last year, I couldn't believe it! I had seen my share of Nintendo fan art, but it never occurred to me that an entire art movement dedicated to 8-bit gaming would see its day! My friend Tony bought me the i am 8-bit art book for Christmas, and I've really enjoyed reading about the artists' fondest memories of classic Nintendo. I think for my next project I'd like to create my own work of 8-bit art, but first I must decide upon the subject matter! There are plenty of grand memories that I can draw upon for inspiration:
  • When I was six years old, I would get so worked up trying to beat Lemmy's Castle in Super Mairo World that I would pause the game, lie on my bed and visualize different ways I conquer that boss! Sometimes I got so sweaty thinking about it that I'd take off my shirt!
  • Getting the theme music from Archon stuck in my head during church! (did anyone else play Archon for the NES? It was like a battle chess game!)
  • Playing Ice Hockey for the NES just to see the little guys in the ice smoother cars zoom across the rink!
  • Fighting my cousins for a turn at T & C Surf Design. I hardly ever got to play!

Now that I've got myself thinking about my old gaming days, maybe I'll start sketching out some ideas!! What are your fondest gaming memories? Do tell!
