Apache, Linux, Wireless, C++
...
All the excitement! For the past few weeks, i have worked on Java apps, C++ apps, two separate CMS dev. and implementations, an e-commerce site, checked out the new version of the Sun Solaris OS, implemented a couple blogs, built a video preview-system that ties into an Online store, setup and installed a couple SSLs (key, CSR, and, CRT) on the Apache server, and re-configured the network so that my wireless connection/work goes seemlessly. And the week is not over! i still have a host of stuff to implement for a Monday deadline; plus i have been playing with JavaFX.

Linux, Ubuntu
Just got the new toy -- Dell Inspiron running Ubuntu. Hmmm. i'm feeling really good right about now. Still doing some configs, upgrading apps, etc...more to come.

OMar, Linux, C/C++
COM Port issues have been resolved!? i was finally succesful in getting COM port to talk to OMaR, i got the OOPic IDE to recognize the a "Serial Programmable Cable" was attached and that it was a good connection on the correct port. However, this, as i have come to discover, is a work in progress that involves ridiculous amounts of frustration. See, the connection is only sometimes good. The IDE (in my opinion) is a piece of crap that needs alot of work in terms of debugging. After trying, trying, and trying to establish the connection, and then finally making that connection, it returns additional errors when trying to download code to the OOPic. Crud! There seem to be countless incidents of this, because i've read numerous posts on Embedded Related that refer to the same topic(s). No one seems to have a definitive answer for solving the problem though -- it all seems like riding a carousel of "solutions" that you cannot get off of.
At any rate, i have decided to forgo the OOPic IDE and more importantly, the even worse M$ environment (OOPic IDE is M$ only), all together and attempt to come up with a solution on Linux. i know that i can use minicom to talk to the tty on Linux, but this too seems like a pain in the ass. We will see though, maybe there is a better solution out there, if not, then i will try to create my own. i have been looking at SDCC -- the Small Device C Compiler so maybe that will be able to work, i just need to experiment with it, to really learn about all that it is capable of. If anyone out there knows of a better way of communicating with the OOPic II+, please let me know.

Linux, LabVIEW, Java, NetBeans
Okay, so i do not have much to report on today. i do however, have to rejoice in the fact that i finally installed the Sun JDK 6.0 and NetBeans 6.0 (M10) on the Linux box; no more will i have to stumble around Eclipse like a clumsy oaf. The only thing left for me to do now is to install the full version of NetBeans 6.0 once it is officially released. That however, should not be more than an update of the current distro, so it's no big deal.
i have not worked on the *bot programming nor have i worked on 'Project X' in a little while.
'Project X' is undergoing a thorough re-thinking of the infrastructure that it will require in order to function properly, run smoothly, and provide a secure, stable, and enjoyable user experience. i have not worked on *bot only for the past week or so. i have been swamped with other projects as well as handling the migration process to the Linux machine. The full version of LabVIEW just came in the mail a couple days ago, but i have yet to install it. That should be a lot of fun though. i played around with the real-time version on the Web site and also sat through a couple Web casts; they were all that.

Books, Linux
Following the new Linux installation, decided that it would be in my best interest to get a book on linux and do some reading, in an effort to become more versed in the topic. The book that i purchased is entitled: A Practical Guide to Red Hat Linux -- Fedora Core and Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Let me say, this is a an excellent book. It covers everything from installation to configuration in a lucid and easy-to-read manner. GNOME and KDE config are covered in-depth and there is a breadth of information, (including examples), on using the Bourne Again Shell. Topics range from the basic (writing simple shell scripts, parameters and variables) to the advanced (Recursive Shell Scripts, Builtin Commands), and covers everything so it is not written, in my opinion, for any specific level of familiarity with Linux. A novice (n00b) could use this book to get started with Linux and a more advanced user could also benefit from a good deal of the information covered.

Linux, Design, Fedora
Well, i spent a considerable portion of the day today configuring the Fedora implementation. i have to say that i do love being back in the Lunix environment. Not having to wait, for what seems like an eternity, to log on to the system, not waiting forever while it loads crap that i do not intend to use anyway, and having a super-speedy response when launching applications such as Eclipse is pure bliss. That was the majority of the day. i simply took some time out to re-familiarize myself with Linux, do some software installs, and just enjoyed using it.

Linux, Fedora, Ubuntu
So, following my escapade with Ubuntu yesterday, i decided to give it a go again today. Alas, that too did not go according to plan. My buddy edthemighty -- over at Jaiku -- made a couple very good suggestions; give a) Linux Mint or b) Knoppix a try. i really gave it some thought, checked them out, but then decided to go with a Fedora implementation. Eureka! Success is mine. This is the first entry from Linux and i could not be more happy. Fedora is slammin'.

Linux, Ubuntu
Made a gallant effort to install Ubuntu today to no avail. Everything else seemed to work fine, Gimp, GAIM, etc. Not sure what the deal was. Created the CD, tried booting from the disk (CD) -- nothing. Tried launching from the HD -- noting. All the other applications work fine. i was able to use them all. i could even launch Ubuntu in K-Meleon, though the appications did not show up as they should. Additionally, whenever i would click on the 'Install' links, i would get a message telling me that the file(s) do not exist at the specified location even though when i physically look, they are there. What gives? Who knows. i will take another crack at it tomorrow, maybe i just needed to step away for a while.
