Actually the Dutch "FDA" produce shorter list of what they are sure that is not halal for mosleem. So far I learn that different countries produce different list, however emulsifier 470-478 and 482 are the most forbiden anywhere, but unfortunatelly, the most used in many food. One brand may use different ingridients for different products. For example Lays chips, the BBQ taste use the haram emulsifier, but the natural one doesn't. Hertog ice cream is the one without emulsifier, any water icecream never use this emulsifier, then your son will have plenty of choice :-) So, don't worry, eventhough there are so many good things contain this emulsifier, there are a lot of that are free from them.
