Coming Together For Raya

, ,

Bandar Seri Begawan - Hari Raya is a joyous celebration for Muslims that signifies the end of a monthlong fasting period.

On the first day of Aidilfitri, Muslims will hold prayers at mosques throughout the country and visit cemeteries to pay their respects to departed family members and loved ones. Upon reaching home, family members will gather for breakfast. This is followed by the noble act of asking for forgiveness from each other for any wrongdoings in the past.

Over the next few weeks, Muslim celebrants will open their doors welcoming families and friends.

The 'open house' concept brings people together regardless of their religion, position or background. This is when people put aside their differences and come together as one.

Scrumptious food and delicacies are served to guests. Favourites include ketupat and lemang served with peanut sauce, rendang and satay. These delicacies are offered at almost all open houses during Hari Raya. Other favourites include serunding (fried grated coconut), nasi kunyit (yellow rice) and chicken in spicy gravy.

During this festive season, you are bound to be invited to someone's house to join in the celebration of joy, togetherness and happiness.

Ex-Police Officer Rescues Teens From Being Swept Away

, , ,

Bandar Seri Begawan - Two teenagers are lucky to be alive today after a passer-by came to their aid as they were swept away by the waters in a concrete drain in Kg Mata-Mata, Gadong, last Sunday afternoon.

The two boys shouted for help as they drifted away for 200 metres inside the drain. They were close to being swept away into the river.

Fortunately, Ex-Cpl Awang Diamon Hj Tengah who was searching for a piece of land that was advertised for sale heard their cries and threw a cable into the drain.

"I tied one end of the cable to the metal barrier and threw the other end to the boys," said the former police officer who has experience in handling such situations while in the police force.

"Luckily they managed to grab hold of the cable," he said, adding that it was raining heavily that afternoon. "I was worried, as they could have slammed their heads onto the concrete planks under one of the bridges."

It was learnt that one of the boys fell into the drain in front of his house as he was trying to retrieve one of his slippers. His older brother also fell into the drain as he tried to pull him.

The family's maid said that she ran to the garage to get a long hose when she saw the boys in the drain. However, by the time she got the hose, the boys had already drifted away.

Awang Diamon told the boys not to play near the drain again. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Made In Brunei Product Festival In Tutong

, , , ...

Tutong - LOCAL small and medium enterprises (SMEs) were given the opportunity to promote and display their best products yesterday at the Local Products Festival in Tutong.

The event received flattering attention from locals and foreigners who flocked in large numbers to the Central Mall, where it is being held till July 6. The festival, funded by the Ministry of Industry and Primary

Resources (MIPR), aims to provide participating local SMEs with essential exposure for the quality and variety of their products.

Well-known names such as Mulaut Abbatoir, Mashhor Foods and Brunei Meat Company (BMC), made their presence felt amongst the 30 exhibitors which signed up for the event.

Displays featured a variety of products ranging from handicrafts and traditionally-woven fabrics to local cakes and delicacies.

Children and adults of all ages had their share of fun-filled Sunday, which saw eager participation in several family friendly events.

BMC organised an eating competition, which saw people of all ages wolfing down BMC hotdogs.for a period of time, resulting in a few enlarged waists within the crowd after the contest.

Curious visitors could not help staring in awe at the colossal chunk of meat sandwiched between two loaves of bread and fresh vegetables which was BMC and bread maker Gardenia's II -inch wide burger, which was unveiled before a delighted crowd.

Guest of honour Hj Jamain Momin, the acting District Officer of Tutong, took the pleasure of touring the individual booths.

Syarikat Aisma, owned by Siti Aishah Salleh, was one of the exhibitors making their first public appearance through the fair. Specialising in songkok, baju cara melayu and baju kurung and kebaya, Siti Aishah has been a participant of the business incubator programme under MIPR's Entrepreneurial Development Centre since 2005. She makes songkok at home using a manual sewing machine, turning out an average of three songkok a day.

"At first, I had no interest in this kind of business. But as soon as I learnt how to make songkok when I was studying under the Ministry of Education's Continuing Education programme, my slight interest became a hobby, and I decided to buy an electronic sewing machine to increase my revenue," said an eager Sid Aishah.

Revenue did increase as the upgraded equipment helped her double her daily songkok production.

"Before I settled into this business, I wanted to make sure that I only involved (myself) in a business that is not too risky. I've also had previous experience in making baju kurung and baju kebaya."

However she decided to make songkok making her main priority, saying that the trade was not common among Bruneians.

"Locals must know and not forget how to make our traditional clothing.

"When it's made by Indonesians or Malaysians it's not exactly `Made in Brunei' is it? Bruneian songkok should be made by Bruneians," SitiAishah said.

The fair will feature leisure activities such as karaoke competitions, a colouring contest for kids and others, especially on the weekends. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times

Hi-Tech Gambling Comes Under Fire

, , , ...

Bandar Seri Begawan - Evil has now become hi-tech and comes in the form of the ever-popular short message service (SMS) on to your mobile, said the Imams in their Friday sermon.

4-digit lottery, gambling games, gambling quizzes and even auction sale gambles are now directly received straight into your hands on your mobiles, the religious leaders observed.
Even the lottery tickets banned in Brunei comes on SMS, they said and so does the 4-digit gamble.

In what may seem to be a detailed explanation to clear the air among Ummah in the sultanate, Imams in a sermon lashed-out at those engaging in these prohibited and sinful activities and fed their families through this wrong source of income.

The religious authorities said Allah gave bliss, be it on one's mind or sight, to earn a living.

In earning a living, Islam prohibits the Ummahs from acquiring sinful and prohibited sources of income such as being oppressive, taking interest, corruption, fraud and gambling.

Gambling means any matters that contain betting, trying one's luck for money be it small or large, either in the form of entertainment, games and so on.

Though it comes in various forms such as lottery tickets, four digits, betting, "Katam-Katam," Islam has already mentioned that it is a big sin and prohibited. Islam also outlines negative effects of gambling, but there are still those who ignorantly carried them out regardless of what is good and bad," they said.

Among the most rampant in the community is the 4-digit, which is like buying lottery tickets, in order to get rich quick in an easy manner without putting much effort.

Gambling is a vice and the cash obtained from it is Haram or forbidden and must not be used to feed the family.

If one does it, a severe punishment awaits the wrong doer in the life hereafter.

These include quiz competition, auctions and getting one's opinion through short message service (SMS) that are gaining popularity nowadays, most of which contain the elements of gambling.

These matters have been clarified to the public in the locally-published religious book pertaining to issues raised, "Irsyad Hukum 2004" and the government newspaper, 'Pelita Brunei'. However, it could not be denied that not all people would have read and acknowledged this issue.

It must be noted that some of the quizzes, auction sale or getting one's opinion through the SMS or its equivalent contain elements of gambling, for instance, quiz competitions through the SMS where the client is asked to answer the quiz. Normally, the rate of SMS in this quiz game is higher, like 50 cents compared to the normal rate of 5 cents per SMS.

The sms quiz is similar to a lottery whereby there is a fee charged for every entry to get the prize, and it depends on one's luck. The same goes to asking one's opinion through the SMS, for instance, the customer asks to choose whether to agree or not to the opinion. The SMS rate for every opinion sent through the SMS normally is higher than normal. Customers sending the highest SMS will receive the prize.

Meanwhile, with regards to auction sale through the s-ms, Imams differentiated the auction sale made through the sms and compared it to auction sale permissible according to religious Syara’. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
