Tutong - LOCAL small and medium enterprises (SMEs) were given the opportunity to promote and display their best products yesterday at the Local Products Festival in Tutong.

The event received flattering attention from locals and foreigners who flocked in large numbers to the Central Mall, where it is being held till July 6. The festival, funded by the Ministry of Industry and Primary

Resources (MIPR), aims to provide participating local SMEs with essential exposure for the quality and variety of their products.

Well-known names such as Mulaut Abbatoir, Mashhor Foods and Brunei Meat Company (BMC), made their presence felt amongst the 30 exhibitors which signed up for the event.

Displays featured a variety of products ranging from handicrafts and traditionally-woven fabrics to local cakes and delicacies.

Children and adults of all ages had their share of fun-filled Sunday, which saw eager participation in several family friendly events.

BMC organised an eating competition, which saw people of all ages wolfing down BMC hotdogs.for a period of time, resulting in a few enlarged waists within the crowd after the contest.

Curious visitors could not help staring in awe at the colossal chunk of meat sandwiched between two loaves of bread and fresh vegetables which was BMC and bread maker Gardenia's II -inch wide burger, which was unveiled before a delighted crowd.

Guest of honour Hj Jamain Momin, the acting District Officer of Tutong, took the pleasure of touring the individual booths.

Syarikat Aisma, owned by Siti Aishah Salleh, was one of the exhibitors making their first public appearance through the fair. Specialising in songkok, baju cara melayu and baju kurung and kebaya, Siti Aishah has been a participant of the business incubator programme under MIPR's Entrepreneurial Development Centre since 2005. She makes songkok at home using a manual sewing machine, turning out an average of three songkok a day.

"At first, I had no interest in this kind of business. But as soon as I learnt how to make songkok when I was studying under the Ministry of Education's Continuing Education programme, my slight interest became a hobby, and I decided to buy an electronic sewing machine to increase my revenue," said an eager Sid Aishah.

Revenue did increase as the upgraded equipment helped her double her daily songkok production.

"Before I settled into this business, I wanted to make sure that I only involved (myself) in a business that is not too risky. I've also had previous experience in making baju kurung and baju kebaya."

However she decided to make songkok making her main priority, saying that the trade was not common among Bruneians.

"Locals must know and not forget how to make our traditional clothing.

"When it's made by Indonesians or Malaysians it's not exactly `Made in Brunei' is it? Bruneian songkok should be made by Bruneians," SitiAishah said.

The fair will feature leisure activities such as karaoke competitions, a colouring contest for kids and others, especially on the weekends. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
