Brunei To Mark Ramadhan Tomorrow

Bandar Seri Begawan - Muslims in Brunei Darussalam will begin the month-long Ramadhan fasting Thursday, September 13, after religious officials confirmed the new moon of Ramadhan was not sighted. The result of the sightings was announced over the radio and television last evening.
Syarie Judges and officials of the Syariah Court, officials from the State Judiciary Department, Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Survey Department, Ministry of Development made attempts to sight the 'hilal' or new crescent moon at several vantage locations at Bukit Shahbandar in Jerudong, Bukit Agok Firing Range and Bukit Ambok in the Tutong District and Bukit Lumut in the Belait district.
In Bukit Shahbandar, among the officials that were present included Ustaz Haji Mohd Lazim bin Haji Metali, Syariah Subordinate Judge, and Pengiran Hj Tashim bin Pengiran Haji Hassan, Syarie Judge. The officials were unable to sight the new moon on the horizon. The sighting of the moon signifies the starting of the month-long dawn to dusk fasting by Muslims as stated in the five pillars of Islam.
Various religious activities will commence during the holy month and as usual, the nightly `terawikh' prayer will begin Wednesday night, while the `hertedarus' ceremony will also begin to highlight the Ramadhan nights at all mosques and prayer halls in the country.
Reading of the Holy Quran or `bertedarus' and performing the nightly `terawikh' and with prayers are among the recommended religious activities throughout the Ramadhan month.
The Ramadhan stalls will also be fully operational Thursday at several locations throughout the country.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Religious Affairs held a religious ceremony for the sighting of the new moon for Ramadhan at the Dewan Teratai, 5th Floor, Ministry of Religious Affairs, while waiting for the announcement of sightings from various places in the Sultanate.
Present at the ceremony was Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, Acting Minister of Religious Affairs.
Also present were Pehin Orang Kaya. Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Development; Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato

The ceremony began with the recital of verses of al-Quran by Ustaz Bady El Sayed Badwy Abdel Naby, a teacher from the Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, and followed by a recital of surah yassin and tahlil led by Awang Haji Shari bin Haji Sulaiman, Mosque Affairs Department, Ministry of Religious Affairs. This was followed by a doa selamat.
