Jazz FOR Kids And A Kaca Experience For Japanese Youth

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Special Needs Children at KACA Centre were treated to jazz music yesterday by Japanese Al-Jazz Band students who are here on a culture exchange programme. The group arrived on Friday yand are expected to leave the country on August 29.

The group of eight students from primary and high school aged between 11-18 years are accompanied by Mr Morishige Yasunori, chief director of the Tokyo-Brunei Darussalam Cultural Exchange Association. The group was welcomed and briefed by Managing Director of KACA Centres, Haji Awg. Abd. Halim bin Haji Awg Othman.

Cikgu Haji Awg. Ahd. Halim explained that KACA (Centre for Children with Special Needs) is a voluntary organization (NGO) concerned with the care and welfare of children with special needs in Brunei, especially in early education.

Currently, KACA has two branches in Brunei-Muara District and Tutong that have catered and given training to nearly 113 Special Needs Children, and the numbers are expected to increase from time to time.

He added that KACA gets funding from members of the public, private sector, welfare associations, volunteer bodies and caring individuals in the country to run the centre's activities. The centre also organizes activities such as walkathon, jogathon, charity night and charity shows from time to time to generate income for KACA funds.

KACA is going to open another branch in Kuala Belait District in September this year. He said the main objective of KACA complexes in all the districts is as a benchmark to place all facilities, programmes and activities to establish a Special Training Institute that provides rehab and education based on an Early Education Programme (Early Development) and Special Education from early childhood from the age of 1 to 12. From here, the children will further their studies in normal schools under the Ministry of Education.

The centre now has a total of 523 members with 330 recorded in BruneiMuara District, 73 in Kuala Belait, 92 in Tutong and 28 in Temburong District. And the total of number) of KACA children joining the daily programme are 113. The centre has 10 full time staff/ volunteers, seven in Bruu&-Muara, and three in Tutong and 60 volunteers comprising teachers, parents, school students, and UBD students.

Programmes held at the centre include Physiotherapy, Occupation Therapy, Speech Delay, Hearing, Visual, Remedial Therapy, Parent/family education/training.

The purpose of the Japanese Al-Jazz band visit to KACA centre is to expose their young generation to understand community and society values and to foster closer ties with the special needs community, especially the handicapped. The Japanese students also took the opportunity to mingle with the KACA children.

While in the country, the Japanese students also visited places of interest and experience the Brunei lifestyle under the Homestay Programme with foster families. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
