Woman Approaches Beribi Offices For Money For An Eye Operation

Bandar Seri Begawan - A woman, believed to be in her 70s, was said to have approached several offices in Beribi yesterday, asking for money to pay for an eye operation.

A woman in her 20s, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Bulletin yesterday that this old woman came to her office asking for money.

"The woman, who is in her 70s, came to the office in the morning with a bandage over one eye claiming that she is half blind.

"But she did not state the cause of her injuries. The woman showed a medical certificate of her injury from a clinic in a neighbouring country." She claimed that she needed money for an operation on her eye.

The young woman added, "We were very sympathetic about her predicament but the certificate looked dubious, so we were reluctant to give her any money.

"She was not forceful in any way. However, we suspected it was another scam similar to an earlier one we read in the Bulletin.

"What struck us as really odd was the fact that despite the disability with her sight, she was able to walk around and ask for money from other offices in Beribi."

Similar scams have occurred in the past. The Bulletin recently reported that a woman was seeking aid after she claimed that she had no money for a bus fare to return to Kuching. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
