Education in Oman has developed at a rapid pace since Sultan Qaboos Said accession in 1970. At that time there were only three rudimentary schools in the entire country, with 909 pupils and less than 30 teachers. There are now over 1,000 schools in Oman, 90 per cent of them government-run providing education at primary, preparatory and secondary levels. There are 560,000 students under state education, nearly half of them female.
