Kazuhiko Yoshida from the Energy Conservation Centre Japan (ECCJ) underlined this at yesterday's energy conference on "Promotion of Energy Efficiency and Conservation (PROMEEC)", where he emphasised that energy conservation is the essential measure for humans to survive.
He lauded Brunei's National Development Plan that is in the process of being established and is focused on energy efficiency and its conservation. He said that in addition to implementing a national basis for the efficient use of energy, it might be ideal for Brunei to provide customers with guidelines for the efficient use of oil and natural gas.
Improvements in the awareness of energy efficiency and conservation, especially by top managers of enterprises, as well as providing them with comprehensive guidelines with added incentives should provide the Sultanate with a stronger motivation to accelerate activities to improve its infrastructure, noted the energy expert.
"It is important for various stakeholders to understand that the systematic energy management is very effective and useful for improving and sustaining various improvements."
Senior Executive Engineer from the Department of Electrical Services, Hj Ismail Ptiteh, acknowledged that the global demand for energy is increasing at a faster pace than ever before. "In the last few years, the increase in energy demand has not been matched by a commensurate increase in energy supply. There is little spare capacity left for global oil production," he said.
This, in addition to the rising oil prices, has raised the profile of energy efficiency and conservation globally. According to an authoritative 2002 report by the National Research Council, fuel efficiency improvements have saved the United States about 2.8 million barrels of oil per day. Furthermore in the East Asia region, around 20 per cent of energy consumption can be saved by 2030 through energy efficiency and conservation methods alone.
"Energy efficiency and conservation is indeed amongst the key components in the strategy towards safeguarding our future energy needs in a sustainable way without compromising economic growth and our precious environment," noted the engineer.
He said that energy management could help companies improve their productivity and increase their product or service quality.
"With oil and gas being our primary sources in the foreseeable future, energy management can be expected to grow in size with its importance and be more recognisable in the future," he said. Using less energy to obtain the same output will decrease production costs for businesses and their dependence on energy, as well as increasing their competitive edge in the market. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
