Snow??????

Quick morning update. Our plan is to ride the coast section, over to Vallee T, and then spend the night at Mike's Sky Ranch. Only problem is yesterday there was 3" of snow at Mike's. What?????? Brent and I are used to hitting snow in December in the mountains around Vancouver, but Baja Mexico??? Looks like that global warming stuff really is true.

Baja Finally

After 2 and a half long years, I am finally back in Baja. We arrived in town this afternoon and got out for a short warmup ride. We are post-running the 1000 mile course, as the race was 2 weekends ago. Brent and I met Dan in San Diego on Saturday, exactly 24 hours of driving after we left home. Managed to stop for a good In and Out burger on the way. Dan was well prepared as always, bring two extra bikes, in case we have an equipment failure. I guess that would be the Victorian we, as it is usually my stuff that breaks.

Brent and I managed to negotiate 2400 kms without incident, but we starting following Dan this morning and immediately go lost. Only problem was we were in a border town, on the wrong side of the border to be driving around like a bunch of foolish gringos loaded with equipment. Eventually we got it sorted and on the highway to Ensenada.

We are back at our usual haunt.

The compound is strangely empty this time, no big rigs and race teams.

All the hype and fanfare that surrounds the race is gone, and the city seems strangely quiet. Well not quiet, but all the banners and vendors are gone, there are no 1000 hp trucks tearing through traffic and we are the only bikes, and Dan is the only guy jumping curbs and riding down sidewalks to get through traffic.

Even the hotel is quiet. We got the KTM team room without lying for a change.

Tomorrow we head out on a bike ride, so we will see how that goes. We had planned on being able to follow the course, as it would be well worn in, however there was a big rain storm last night, which washed away many of the tracks. One the good side, the silt beds were nice and rideable today, and very little dust. In the place of dust were puddles, which Dan took full advantage of, giving me a full on shower shortly into the ride.

Stoli Doles and a Reflection on the State of Rock and Roll

There are two people which I consider extremely important in the world of Rock and Roll. Bono (more on him later) and my close personal friend Roger Daltrey (I also have a bridge for sale). A couple of weeks ago, Rog was playing a small venue in Chicago called the House of Blues, a pretty cool place, unless you are 5'3" tall. Then the sight lines suck. We decided to stop round and pay him a quick visit. So as the moon rose over Chicago, we walked on down to the HoB.

Much to my surprise, as we walked along, I ran into an old friend. Not quite the same old friend as I ran into in Cuba, but a good friend nonetheless. It was the Capital Grille. I had a fantastic evening in Detroit at the Capital Grille many years ago, and I did not realize it was a chain. The Capital Grille have a signature drink called the Stoli Dole

On the bar is a large jug full of Dole sliced pineapple, which has been marinating in Stoli Vodka for a week.

There is a tap on the bottom, which the bartender can be tricked into opening, and pouring some vodka into a shaker of ice. The vodka then gets transferred to your glass.

They are a most wonderful concoction, so we decided to have several.
The Capital Grille also has a to die for Peppercorn New York Strip Steak.

Now as you can see from my shirt we were on our way to see Roger, the lead singer of the greatest Rock and Roll Band of all time, the band that epitomises ROCK AND ROLL (with capital letters). Keith Moon, went out young in a blaze of glory, The Ox made it until he was 60 when he had a heart attack in a hotel room in Las Vegas, with a nose full of coke and two hookers in bed with him. Pete made history by smashing his equipment, Keith threw a TV out of every Hotel room window that he stayed in.

I was feeling a little foolish sitting in this extremely posh restaurant eating a steak that cost over $40 US, and the potato was extra.

A place that has bottles of wine on the list that are over $800.00. I wondered if I was being true to the spirit of Rock and Roll. Then our waiter informed us that there were several other tables in the place, having dinner, prior to going to see Roger. We were over a half mile from the HoB, and there many posh steakhouses closer to the concert than this one. The HoB only holds 1500 people

Do the math and tell me, what that says about the demographic of Rock and Roll.
The show was fantastic. Roger still rocks at 60. He had Simon Townshend, Pete's brother playing with him, and Simon knows how to rock and roll pretty well too.

The rest of the band were kids, but the kids had all worshipped at the altar of The Who, and the drummer had studied long and hard at Keith's unique style of drumming.

In the end, I think, that it is not how old you are, or how much money you have, but how much fun you have. We had a lot of fun that night. Although the next morning Kim mentioned something about swearing off Stoli Doles.......

Truth in Advertising

Several years ago a new factory was being built in Oklahoma, near where I work. I seem to recall it was for Seagate Harddrives, since they already have a facility next to this place, but I am not sure. Anyhow the project was never completed. Every Friday when I am in Oklahoma, we drive past it going to Bad Brad's for Lunch. I never really noticed the sign until last Friday, and then I cracked up.

Notice the words 100% Climate Controlled, bringing to mind a nice cool airconditioned building in the summer and a toasty warm one in the winter. But.....it says climate controlled, not controlled climate.

Here is the building......

Like I said, the project was never really completed.

Birthday Part 2

After we left the Hook it was off to see Dr. Strangelove at the Starlight Casino. Back on the bus it was time to finish off the Jello Shooters

Patti shows us how it is done.

The bus left us at the Casino for several hours of dancing and sillines. Big Mic won some money, making him the most popular person in the club.

Brenda and Ken came along too, but they avoided the public transit system and took their own vehicle.

Somewhere along the way, Brenda got some groovy shades

Kim got to meet the Keyboard Player.

In the spirit of promoting world peace, everyone was very friendly.

Ali and Andrew - Andrew seemed to be enjoying himself tonight....

Kim and Lori

Near the end of the night people finally got it sorted out the right way round

There was time for one last pole dance on the bus ride back home.

Good thing we don't have birthdays every week Bryan

Bday Bus Pics

Right then Moickel...The real reason it has taken so long to post pictures from the party bus, is that there was a brass pole in the back of the bus, and it seems everyone wanted to take advantage of it. It took me a long time to photoshop clothes back on everyone. Too many naked photos of Big Mick would get me banned from the Opera blogging community

Anyhow, after dinner we all loaded on the bus for a quick tour of some of the finer drinking establishments in our area. The girls couldn't wait for the 2 minute drive to our first stop "The Arms".

From the Arms, we headed on to the Dublin Crossing, and then back to the Hook. It seems everyone enjoyed the fireball

Well almost everyone....

The evening ran like clockwork, thanks to the precision military execution of the commander, yours truly. A few stern orders were required to keep the troops unruly...

The drinks were pre-ordered at all the stops, so we just ran in, gulped and ran back out.
Eventually the bus was segregated into the spectators in the front of the bus,

and the eyecandy in the back.

At the Dublin, the contest to win Kim G was very popular

At the Hook and Ladder,

Mick and Jay showed off their Big Boy Club Membership cards,

while in the absence of a scale, Keith made a strong argument for a waiver entry to the club.

Brent, our regular designated driver was lost, having been made redundant by Kevin our bus driver.

More pics to come as I get them cleaned up

Halloween

Little E was a Monkey for Halloween, not really much of a change from day to day reality.

Eric decided that it was okay to help himself to the candy bowl.

We hung out with Shrek, The Devil a Bee and a Pirate.

Everyone had a pretty good haul...

Then it was time for the negotiations.

Right Then Mick

Kim celebrated a milestone birthday a couple of weeks back. Some of the family have been hounding me about not getting anything posted. Tonight every muscle in my body hurts after a good day on the motorbike, and I am too tired to work, so I will post a few pics.

We invited everyone over to start the evening with a Carne Asada dinner. Brenda was kind enough to smuggle some real Carne Asada from south of the border. Since we invited 5 or 6 members of the big boy club for dinner, 12 pounds of meet was ordered.

The only problem with smuggling good Mexican food into Canada, is that it is much harder to smuggle a Mexican to cook it.

Therefore the task fell to the only Gringo that has been to a Spanish speaking country, which really isn't the best way to select a chef. A few minor grillage mishaps ensued.

Fortunately Brenda knows that the secret to a good dinner is a good pre-dinner drink (or 6)

The feeding frenzy started and a bit of black on the meat didn't really slow down the faithful. Notice how proper etiquette is followed, fat guys first, women and children get the scraps.

I baked a great cake for Kim....

Then it was time for the party bus. We had selected Gentleman Jim's Cherry Bomb, as the official transportation provider for Kim's celebration. I was equipped with a killer stereo, and a brass pole for dancing. Unfortunately, the pictures are not suitable for family viewing.....

Rum Sodomy and The Lash In Seattle

In keeping with our recent trend of seeing bands in smaller venues, last weekend we headed to Seattle to see the Pogues.
First was a stop in FX McRory's which during my last visit in 1982 was a very posh place boasting the best selection of Whisky in Seattle. It has since turned into more of a sports bar, upfront. The restaurant in the back was closed, but it still looked wuite posh.

Brenda and Jerry with his new beer phone came along for the evening frivolities as well

FX McRory's current claim to fame, at least in my mind, should be that it has the best beef dip. Being a fat guy who eats in a lot of pubs, that is not a claim to be taken lightly, and it was the best, by far. Here we see Jerry with the beef dip, lightly toasted on sour dough. It was real prime rib, not the lower quality roast you often find.

Then it was off to the show. It was at the ShowBox SoDo, a pretty cool standing room only venue. Due to our stop for food (I know Mr Hunter - Eating's Cheating), we were a long way from the stage.

The crowd was entertaining too.

This was my first live experience with the Pogues. Shane MacGowan was back with the band for this tour. I am not a Pogues purist, so I also enjoy the post Shane songs sung by Spider.

I was familiar with Shane's reputation for enjoying a drink or two, but was not prepared for his stage presence - I think that is what you call it. I am not sure whether years of booze have just imprinted drunkenness on his brain, or if he really was that toasted. He was unintelligible. Everything was one long slur, including the only 4 words he spoke to the crowd "Fawsk Orf" and "Shank yoush". Spider only got one song in, but it was a great song. The band noticably tightened up and came to life. Audience members in the crowd around me, told me not to complain, that I was witnessing a piece of history, however I have now seen history and prefer the post Shane Pogues.

Nevertheless we were all still smiling and dancing at the end of the night.

We ended off the evening with a Rockin Ride in Achmed's cab. He had the volume pumped up and was rocking.
