More Baja Surprises

While we wait for Dan to post a wrap up story, I found this interesting item on Baja Racing News. In an earlier post I had mentioned the helicopter crash that killed 2 people on board the helicopter and seriously injured 2 spectators. Unfortunately the death toll has gone uo to 4, but not as you would expect. It seems the helicopter had nothing to do with the race. It was a big Mexican drug dealer in a rental helicopter. There is video of the crash on BajaRacingNews along with the full story. I think they were out on a joy ride watching the race as there is another video of what appears to be the same helicopter hotdogging over spectators elsewhere on the course. Anyhow, the drug dealer and his friend were killed in the crash and their bodies taken to the Ensenada Morgue. On Wednesday evening, a group of armed men in at least 12 SUVs stormed the morgue, kidnapped 2 employees, and took the body of the drug dealer. Apparently, this is common for Mexican drug gangs to recover the bodies of their members. As the convoy sped away, they encountered a Police vehicle with two officers, who were both shot and killed. Read the whole story, and watch the Spanish video at BajaRacingNews. You might have to scroll down, as I can't figure out how to link directly to the story.
