Styx

Yup Styx. The rockers from my early teens are alive and still playing music, the same music, but it was good in it's day, and enjoyable to listen to every now and then. They were playing at the Red Robinson Theatre, a 1000 seat venue, not exactly the stadium concert venues of the 70's. Somethings don't change though. Tommy Shaw still has the same haridresser as in 1977.

I had heard Dennis DeYoung sing on a Chicago radio station several years ago, and decided that if Styx ever toured again, I should go see them. Dennis' voice sounded great. To my great dismay, hours before the show, I discovered that this version of Styx did not include Dennis. Instead Gowan, a Canadian 80's pop artist was singing. I feared the worst.

Gowan can sing, even if his stage presence makes him seem a little light in his loafers. He nailed every note. It was great. Big Mick went so far as to say he would go see Gowan solo.

Of course there were power ballads complete with the requisite rock and roll hair headbanging.

If you are an aging rock and roller, I would highly recommend a Styx show for a trip down memory lane. It was quite hilarious listening to all the guys my age standing in line at the bar, reminiscing about their high school antics in the parking lots at lunch. Wheelchair access is available at many venues.
