Maybe it is a good thing we didn't go to Baja. Steve Martz, a pro rider with Team Moto USA was shot while prerunning. One version of the story here. However, there are conflicting reports as to how helpful SCORE and their insurance company actually were, as noted here.
I am pretty sure that we met Dan Walsh, the other rider mentioned in the story, and I think our Dan is buddies with Dan Walsh, so I hope to get confirmation of the story from Dan. I personally believe the second report after being down there.
From the GPS plot posted, it appears they were not on the course, they were taking a short cut. We have taken short cuts to get fuel, meet a chase truck, or because we were lost, so it really is scary.
This seems to put a whole new perspective on the type of body armour to wear while riding.
