Sunny Sunday Avalanche Hunt

The Avalanche Hazard has been extreme for most of the season to date. The first dumps of snow were very light and facetted which has created a huge instability layer in the snow. Many tragic avalanche deaths this year. We have elected to stay off (a manly way of saying that Kim told me if I took my sled out, I was not to bother coming home) the mountains until last weekend. The rating had dropped to moderate, so we headed to the cabin for some frivolity and sledding. The frivolity part was the bit where we exceeded the 2 Cosmo limit, helped ourselves to Ted's leftovers from his trip to the colonies, and went sledding at 2:00 am. No pics were available of this escapade, but Sunday dawned bright and sunny. We cannot confirm that it dawned bright and sunny, as we did not rise until the crack of noon. We headed for the peaks and it was a glorious day. There was a shortage of snow, as it had not snowed for a couple of weeks, and the wind had blown all the soft stuff into large slabs on the leeward slopes. The high avalanche hazard had kept everyone else away, so we even found some untracked stuff to play in.
Kim wasn't too keen on heading to the steep stuff initially
But we headed to the main bowl where we sent Hill up first to check for slides.

I decided that if there was no snow, it couldn't slide.
However eventually we headed for the steep hills. We actually dug a pit before playing on this slope
The sun was out, but it was bitterly cold, -12C

We even got Kim up to the top of some of the ridges.

Stopped for a donut on the way back down.
Cheers
