Dakar Rally - Baja Was Just A Warm Up

Last week I was in South America, Argentina and Chile, staying in Buenos Aires and Antofagasta, in the two pictures below.

Antofagasta is a true desert. The last time it rained was somethwere around 1992. They still talk about it.

Now this may have seemed like a work trip, but if you follow offroad racing, you might have noticed that the two cities I visited are at each end of this years Dakar Rally. The Dakar Rally used to be the Paris Dakar Rally, running from Paris, through various parts of Africa. Last year and again this year it is being run in South America, this year from Buenos Aires, through to Antofagasta, and then North to Iquique and back to Anto, and then Buenos Aires. I have always been fascinated by this race, so last Wednesday, I was fortunate enough to meet the route layout crew at breakfast in Antofagasta. I have managed to secure a place in the race for the Fat Guy Follies Motorcycle racing team.

When I told Dan and Brent the great news, Brent's first question was "How are we going to get our equipment down there?"

"Not to worry I told them." When in Antofagasta, Empanada Florencia is not the only eating establishment that I frequent. Mundo Pizza is also on my speed dial. In addition to a pretty mean pizza they also make the infamous "Churrasco Mundo"

Pablo and Hernan also share my love of a messy sandwich.

Due to my loyalty as a customer, Mundo Pizza are going to sponsor us, giving us the use of a couple of their bikes. I was trained by the Ensenada Pizza delivery guys, so I feel right a home on one of these babies.

The box on the back can carry 48 beers, or a 24 pack and a couple of spare tubes.

Watch for us in the desert this January

Cheers
