First BBQ of the Season
Thursday, February 11, 2010 6:30:51 AM
With the temperatures hovering around 14C the other day and the flowers in full bloom, we decided to break out the BBQ and have a party
It turns out that the Vancouver Olympic Committee heard about our plans and decided that they would run the Olympic Torch Relay right past our house. They called us up and we obliged them by adding their name to our party.
I was surprised at the turnout for the relay, people lined the street to see the torch come past. There has been a lot of press given to a very few people who are protesting the Olympics. There were more people out on our block than the total number of people that have attended all of the Olympic protests. Now if you multiply that by 6 blocks per km, and 12000 kms in the torch relay, it becomes quite obvious what the majority of Canadians think about the Olympics.
It was a parade, complete with corporate sponsors. We were drinking Coronas, but alas they were not represented in the parade.
Canadians normally are not that nationalistic, and do not fly the flag at our homes, in fact the only time we display the flag is when we are outside of our country, and then only so that we are not mistaken for Americans. To clarify, it is not that we dislike Americans, so much as other nationalities often treat Canadians differently than Americans. I was once denied service in a bar in Aus, until I showed my flag, then my beer was free. We might have broke the no flags at home rule though.
Finally the police escort came past,
Followed by the Olympic Torch.
Cheers
Oh Canada, Go Canada Bryan
