It seems my friend Mick is dissing me for attending a Police concert. He tells us that he has his ear to the street because he listens to Punk Rock.
This is okay. Years (and year) ago, when I was young, I think I was listening to bands like The Young Canadians, Subhumans, The Pointed Sticks and many other bands whose names have long been erased from my memory. That was 1978. They were punk rockers when everyone spit. I supposed most of them are dead now. I know Dimwit is (RIP). It has taken about 30 years for the music from the colonies to make it to the Hills of East Kilbride.
A little while later my musical tastes expanded, I heard some Ska bands like The Specials, and a band that was blending Ska with other genres like Punk, called the Police. In fact The Specials and The Police toured together, and I think I went to the concert. I thought The Police were pretty cool. Unfortunately, they became commercial sucesses. Some people equate commercial success with crappy music. Perhaps this is Mick's secret, if the The Monkey Butlers only play 2 gigs a year - no one will ever find out about them and therefore the music will be good. The only reason I know that late 70s and early 80s existed, is that I was born in the 60s and am still alive in the 21 Century. Going to concerts allows me to affirm that I was alive during that era.
I do admit that Nouvelle Vague are cool, but you can't give them credit for inventing the concept. We call that process elevator music.
Someone once told me that if you keep your ear on the street, you will get your head stepped on.
Cheers Mick you young pup.
