I think I've found a new goal for myself...

, , , ...

I want to be able, in the future, to go to conventions [of any sort - comic book, anime, scifi, fantasy, etc.] and be known. I want my work to be admired by people who generally come to such events.
Naturally, I don't want them to be giddy teenagers who read anything to be different, but I would love to meet people who have read my work and who want to meet me. It's a great feeling to know that someone else out there appreciates your talent [provided I have any, I suppose].
Being able to be a part of someone else's leisure time through the guise of a book or comic book seems to be an admirable goal to me. I'd like to think I could fulfill someone's bookish needs. =]

In other, very exciting news...I'm graduating tonight. Good-bye high school, hello college! I'm ecstatic. I'm finally done. What a sense of accomplishment.

And, of course, when one door closes, another one inexplicably opens, hopefully nice and wide.

I'm so ready to get out there.

=]

"First time I had read the Bible
It had stroke me as unwitty
I think it may started rumor
That the Lord ain't got no humor."

-from "The Super Theory of Super Everything," by Gogol Bordello.

I just rather liked that verse; I find it appropriate, and true. And I rather like Gogol Bordello. They're so...bohemian. XD

Uhhh, I've been getting really excited about college again. I found a Hampshire-related website called The Daily Jolt, which I believe it run by students. There's a section with professor quotes, which only gets me more excited for college classes. =D

I met this guy Paul last night, with whom I will be going to college. He's really nice, and I'm comforted knowing that I know someone, at least a little bit, with whom I'll be in college. Otherwise, it's all new, you know? And there's nothing wrong with that, it's just hard to adjust when you know no one...

Anyway, I mostly wanted to post that Gogol verse somewhere. I may write more later, who knows.

A Great Artist Isn't Great Because of Her Tools, but In Spite of Them.

The title quote is mine, as far as I know. It came to me last night...I purchased a new lipstick and a new eye paint from the MAC kiosk at Macy*s...and I was like, "How am I going to put on this eye paint?" I figured I'd use a Q-tip, regardless of how "unprofessional" it is. And then I realized...if I can make the eye paint look good despite only using a Q-tip, wouldn't that, in fact, be more impressive than if I used some specialized tool?

And thus, a quote was born. lol

Right now, I'm trying to write a cover letter for a resume. I have an interview tomorrow with a temp agency; I need a summer job. College expenses are...ridiculous. Plus, I found out last night that my checking balance is a hefty $1.11, which is more than depressing. I'm making a deposit tomorrow, but I still need to really stop spending and start saving.

I also need to figure out how much Weird Tales pays for stories. I know it's per word, but I can't remember what their normal maximum number of words is, or how much they pay per word.

At this point, I don't really care if I only get five dollars; that's five closer to my goal.

My friend Bilal offered to pay me for painting his bedroom. The design, I'll admit, is not something about which I'm crazy, or which I'm sure I could actually do...but he's offered a hundred bucks. Is this something I want? I have no idea. I'm going to consider it. Help Beeb come up with something exciting. XD

Anyway, that's all for now.

Excellent.

I'm on freerice.com, winning some rice for the hungry, right? [Get a vocab word right, earn 20 grains of rice for the hungry.]

And I come across davenport, which happens to be a false last name I sometimes use.

It means "writing desk."

I thought that was pretty nifty.

And I've donated 1000 grains of rice thus far. It's not exactly hard, though. XD But it does make me feel important. I wonder how many grains it takes to make a full bowl?

Woot! I just got "banal!" Thank you, Nick Cave. heart

Of course, they pick difficult words and define them with even more difficult words. "Malleable" and "pliant." Indeed. XD And they use dialect words like "blarney." And "frijole." It's a bean. Thank God I'm Italian. XD

And for those of you who are more competitive than generous, your vocabulary level is gauged. Mine currently is 36, but my best is 39. When you get something wrong, your level goes down, but you need to get several correct to bring it up.

It's all quite exciting.

*vocabulary nerd*

I'm off to continue. Might write more later.

We Are Nowhere And It's Now.

No reason for the title, other than it happens to be the song that's currently playing. [Bright Eyes. Don't really listen to 'im much, but I happen to have and love this one song. XD]

I've been doing research today. I bought that Tarot deck, and now it's just a matter of time until I receive it in the mail. My research has consisted of me Wiki-ing every Major Arcana card and reading up on them; I feel a pseudo-story coming on. [Hopefully. *crossy fingers*]

Frankly, some of the cards allude me almost entirely. Some seem redundant, as well.

And then some are just farking amazing. p

My favorite cards are The Fool, The Hanged Man, and the Death. I'm also a fan of The Priestess and the Empress, but possibly because they remind me of Lilith and Eve, respectively. And yes, I can even tie my Judeo-Christian mythology obsession to Tarot. Actually, it's a lot easier than one might assume.

See, being raised Catholic, one is told from a young age that anything even mildly occult is SATAN. Basically. This includes Tarot, of course. And Ouija, but I don't think I'd be caught dead with a Ouija board. Or maybe just dead. [It's really not an irrational fear; there are some things I just won't mess with.]

But...Tarot is based heavily on all mythology, Judeo-Christian included. The Hanged Man has allusions to Christ...The Devil card is purely a work of Christian influence, if anything is. I'm going to paraphrase, and I forget who said it, but..."Satanism is just some sort of disease of Christianity; you have to be really Christian to believe in Satan." True. Truetruetrue.

But again, fortune-telling aspect aside, the history and concept of Tarot is quite fascinating. I think what I like most about the whole Tarot thing is that...it makes you look at yourself more, consider what you could improve, and whatnot.

Anyway, moving rapidly along to another topic entirely...

I realize this Opera account doesn't really leave room for all of my favorite things...movies, books, etc. My question is...should I post them in a blog entry? Should I put them in my About Me section? I feel like it's good if people know that sort of stuff. I feel like I really do grow the more I'm exposed to things, and my favorites say a heck of a lot about me.

Of course, my lists are usually waaaaaaaaaaay too long. jester [By the bye, I love the jester emoticon. I'm sure you can tell.]

But let's see...what are important things to know...? Books, movies, television shows, authors, musicians, actors/actresses...foods has a section...I suppose that's it. My books alone could take up pages. Seriously. I read way too much.

Which brings me to my next topic: I have not yet read today. doh A sure shocker, that. I've gotten just over four-hundred pages into this beast of a book. It's absolutely excellent, it's just hefty. One thousand six pages is a challenge; certainly the largest book I've ever read. Up until now, I think the total was somewhere 'round about 800, and that was a Harry Potter book, which means it was an easy read. I shant criticize the books here, though I am know to do it every now and then...but confess, they are fluff. Honestly.

This story has a lot of meat...a lot of characters with intricate...characterizations? lol Good, solid plot...I should have known, though; it was Neil Gaiman-approved. [Neil's on that list of favorite authors...] Hee...

Well, this is certainly a more lengthy entry than usual. If I happen to start making those lists, I'll also start posting them, probably in separate entries which will then be periodically updated, because everything I do seems to lead me to somewhere else.

Anyway. I'll stop making your eyes bleed now.

Some fun nonsense. =]

, , , ...

The Morgan Tarot deck is amazing. Too bad it's $750 used. XD

Just some fun stuff. =]

I'm probably going to buy an Art Nouveau Tarot deck. In a way, I want something reminiscent of my Italian heritage, but I bet that, if I ever go to Italy, I can find some there. The Art Nouveau one is only about twelve bucks [not including S&H], so I don't feel too guilty about it. A lot of Tarot decks cost twenty USD and upwards...

The reason for the sudden interest in Tarot? Wellll...I've always wanted a Tarot deck, mostly for the aesthetic. As far as fortune-telling goes, I'm pretty much ambivalent. Plus, I'm obsessed with gypsies and all sorts of Old World traditions and suchlike.

And I'm reading Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, by Susanna Clarke. In it, the character Childermass has a deck of Marseilles cards...

My goal is actually to make a set of my own Tarot cards, again...because I really love the aestehtic. But I need something from whence to draw inspiration and whatnot. =]

Hallelujah!

NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS. MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, NEW YORK CITY. OCTOBER FOURTH.

I'M SO TOTALLY GOING. yikes

*does a dance*

How excited am I? I can't even express it, really. I don't know how I'm going to last until my sister's birthday. XD

In other news, I should be writing a scholarship essay, and I really kinda wanted to read more of my book tonight...I don't think I've done any real reading in four or five days, which is odd.

My sister and I have been hanging out this weekend, though. Today was Mother's Day, so we were busy planning out a gift for Mommy. And watching M*A*S*H and Doctor Who, I'm not gonna lie. XD

It's nice to hang out with K'Ehleyr, though. [spock XD] Honestly, I know it's mostly because she realizes that I'm going to be leaving soon, and she'll miss me...but I'm rather enjoying it.

Of course, this also means I'm risking myself; she likes to do strange things. Like lick. And mess up my hair.

Yeah, she's thirteen, going on four. jester

Alas. It's almost eight...I really don't feel like writing this scholarship essay [500 words on diversity...it's really not as easy as it should be, I think], and I really do want to read. What a pain.

If you would be so kind...

, ,

I'd like some feedback on this. It's a short story of mine, worked off of a prompt.

While you're there, it would be lovely of you checked out the other stuff.

I've gotten feedback from a lot of people that I know, so I want to hear the opinions of someone new, i.e., the Opera crew. bigsmile

I am also planning on writing something to submit to Weird Tales magazine...suggestions would be most welcome, as well as critiques on my other work so that I can improve my writing, in general.

Many thanks.

Been a while.

, , ,

So. It's certainly been a long time since I last wrote in this blog. To be totally honest, I had completely forgotten about it.

A lot has happened to me since the last blog entry...I've gone to Japan, I've lost a friend to suicide, I've lost my grandfather to cancer...I'm going to college...

Life is funny, when you look back on what seemed like big issues in the past, especially in comparison with what has happened since, both good and bad.

I'm going to consider updating this blog more regularly, I think. I had been largely using my MySpace blog, but I seem to not be blogging quite so often there anymore. I think, for me, blogging is a good form of pseudo-therapy. Regardless of the fact that other people can read what I write, I like to get feedback on my thoughts and feelings, which I think is why I do it at all; I can write my really private things in a journal, should I have any. Which I usually don't. jester

I'm going to putz around on this account for a little while, updating things and whatnot.
