The Church of the Walker's God

Holy Sand Dune

, , , ,

Could I nominate Mount Baldy as a Holy Sand Dune for our church?

It is located in Indiana at the Indiana Dunes National Park. Mount Baldy video

Mount Baldy is a trip! It is very steep in places, and you go three steps and slip back two. It is great to go down, you hop and fly down, just making sure you land on your heels with your weight in your butt or else you will cartwheel all the way down or fall flat on your face! Don't worry, there are stairs, if you want to take the easy route! As the Irrev pointed out, it is a "wandering dune", that means it is a living dune. It travels roughly 4 feet a year. It is also called a "smoking dune", because when the sand blows about it resembles smoke.

It is very big, a remnant of a time when this locality was full of monstrous sand dunes! So much sand was taken to build Chicago and hereabouts. Apparently it used to be even bigger and the area becoming a National and State Park helped to keep the dunes.
